Dr. Jerald Ogg was appointed provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Tennessee at Martin on July 1, 2011, after serving as vice chancellor for Academic Affairs since July 1, 2008. Prior to that, he served as interim vice chancellor for Academic Affairs for one year. A former chair of the UT Martin Department of Communications, dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and interim vice chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr. Ogg holds a Ph.D. in journalism from Southern Illinois University and a law degree (J.D.) from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He joined the UT Martin faculty in 1987 and has served as director of the Tennessee Governor's School for the Humanities since September 2000.


Prior to joining the faculty at UT Martin, Dr. Ogg served as an active duty judge advocate ("JAG") in the U.S. Air Force for four years and later practiced law, specializing in media law and public relations for non-profit organizations, in Baton Rouge, La. A licensed attorney, Dr. Ogg has taught communications law, ethics, public relations, public speaking and advertising at UT Martin. He was selected as a recipient of The University of Tennessee National Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award in 1998 and is a 2010 graduate of the WestStar leadership program. Dr. Ogg also graduated from the University of Tennessee Leadership Institute in 2001 and has served as a facilitator for the Institute since 2007.

 

Dr. Ogg, who was UT Martin Faculty Senate president for 1998-1999, retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 2009 after a career that included attachments at England, Little Rock, Barksdale, Langley, Los Angeles and Maxwell Air Force bases; his last attachment was as Senior Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the commandant of the Air Force Judge Advocate General's School. He is married to the former Jane Nichols of Dyersburg, Tenn., and they have two daughters, Jennifer and Jana.
