Curricula for Secondary Teachers (7-12)

Students who plan to teach in grades 7-12 will follow similar programs during the first two years. The electives in all areas should be carefully chosen so that the student can complete professional and subject matter requirements for graduation and licensure in the chosen subject matter teaching fields.

NOTE: Persons wishing to be non-licensure secondary subject majors should consult with an appropriate advisor in Arts and Sciences regarding that school’s Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree requirements.

General Education Requirements (62 hours)

These requirements are based on a concept of human development which sees the individual as having unique interests and needs; therefore, a number of options are provided so that the student may build an individualized curriculum within the broad framework of the academic disciplines.

1. Communications (9 Hours)
   • English 111-112 or equivalent honors courses
   • Communications 230
2. Humanities (12 Hours)
   • Six hours selected from English 250, 251, 260, 261
   • Six hours selected from Art Appreciation, Music Appreciation, Philosophy or Religion
   • Three areas must be represented in the Humanities Area.
3. Social Science (12 Hours)
   • Six hours to be selected from History 201, 202, 331
   • Psychology 110
   • Sociology 201
4. Mathematics and Computers (6 Hours)
   • Human Learning 311
   • Three hours from the following options:
     • Math 140, 160, 185, 210, 251, 252
5. Science (16 Hours)
   • Biology 110-120
   • Physical Laboratory Science
6. Health and Human Performance (7 Hours)
   • *Four hours selected from physical activity courses numbered between 100 and 299 (excluding 195) (Maximum of 8 hours may be counted toward a degree.)
   • Health 320
   • *Students seeking endorsement in science (7-12) are not required to take four hours of physical activity courses.
