INTERIOR DESIGN/FASHION MERCHANDISING CONCENTRATION

In the Interior Design/Fashion Merchandising concentration a student may choose a specialized subject area from the following options: Interior Design or Textiles, Clothing, and Fashion Merchandising. Also, a student may select a non-specialized combination of sub ject matter courses in human environmental sciences to meet individual career goals.

In addition to creating one's own specialized option, the student has the choice of selecting unspecified electives or a minor in a supporting discipline. Minors in art, business administration, communications, sociology, political science, psychology, an d others are useful selections for complementing the major. An important component of the curriculum which contributes to professional development is supervised field experience. The experience offers each student additional means for individual speciali zation. Enrollment in supervised field experience courses requires a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average. As an alternative to the supervised field experience, students can earn credits in approved, upper division electives.

Careers in both traditional and non-traditional settings are open to graduates. Entry level positions of recent graduates include department manager for a major retail store, child life specialist, free lance interior designer, wholesale representative, m anager in university food service, dietary supervisor, 4-H agent, and counselor for mental health program. Many contemporary issues of society-at-large call for the services of the human environmental sciences graduate who seeks to affect the lives of ind ividuals and families in positive ways.
