LIBRARY COMMITTEE MEETING
September 3, 1997
The UTM Library Committee met on September 3, 1997, in the Seminar
Room of the library with the following members present: Lisa LeBleu,
Aubrey Keller, Nola Hobbs, Mike Applequist, Carel Wolk, Arnold
Redman, Ernie Gibson, John Collins, Jefferson Rogers (representing
Mike Gibson), Christina Powers, Jim Fieser, Vaughn May, Tom Greer,
Nancy A. Warren (representing Jo Aden), Wayne Keene, Ingrid Padial,
Rochelle Larkin, Jim Clark, Joel Stowers, Donna Graves (guest).
Dr. Lisa LeBleu, Committee Chair, opened the meeting by announcing
the agenda for the meeting. The two main items were discussion of the
periodical evaluation from last year and the allocation of the
library materials budget. She called on Joel Stowers, Library
Director, to give a report on the results of the periodical
evaluation project. He stated that the evaluation had three parts: a
periodical use study throughout the year, faculty input on titles
needed, and student bibliographies. When it was determined that the
library budget had to be cut $30,000, it was decided that $25,000 of
that should come from the periodicals budget and $5,000 from the book
budget. The periodicals deleted were not listed as needed by any
faculty and they had not more than one use during the entire year. In
addition, 81 of the 188 titles deleted are now available online full
text.
Stowers also stated that the new online full text service provides
access to over 1300 periodicals plus abstracts for thousands
more.
In turning to the departmental allocations, Stowers explained how he
developed the proposed allocations. LeBleu opened the meeting for
discussion of the proposal. Dr. Tom Greer moved, with a second from
Dr. Vaughn May, that the proposal as submitted be accepted. The
committee voted approval.
Discussion followed on how to distribute the $1000 set aside for
special collection development needs as requested by the committee
last year. Following several recommendations from the members, Dr.
Christina Powers moved, with a second from Greer, that the $1000 be
distributed evenly among the following departments: History (for
Women's Studies materials), Nursing, Biology, and
Psychology/Philosophy. The committee voted approval.
Ms. Rochelle Larkin recommended that a separate accounting of the
$1000 be kept so that confirmation can be made that the funds were
expended for the purposes intended.
The committee adjourned at 3:50 p.m.
