MINUTES OF GRADUATE COUNCIL

Absent: James Johnson, Kenneth D. McCracken
Meeting was called to order at 3:10 pm. Minutes of the previous
meeting were approved as distributed.
Kendall-Melton reported that the NCATE and State Department visits
have been completed and a report will be forthcoming in the spring.
The visits were successful; the graduate programs passed review by
both agencies and the initial licensure program had only one minor
stipulation which involved a wording inconsistency between the
catalog and the Institutional Report.

EDUCATION-EDUC STUDIES
Motion to approve
1. Revision of admission requirements for Major in Counseling
NOTE: In the second paragraph, line 1, change 'Counseling degree' to
major in Counseling; in last line change 'a member of the counseling
education faculty' to the Coordinator of Graduate Programs in
Education. In the last paragraph, lines 2-3, change 'the first three
weeks of the receipt' to four weeks of the issuance. Consensus was
to give Jones and Kendall-Melton responsibility to fine-tune the
wording in the last paragraph regarding recommendations from the
Counseling Admissions Board.
2. Revision of program requirements for Major in Counseling
NOTE: For the elective section, add at the 600 level or above
between 'electives' and 'should'; replace 'School of Education
Counseling Program' with Ed Psyc discipline.
3. Revision of course desc and prereq for Ed Psyc 787 Internship
in Sch Couns (3)
4. Revision of course desc and prereq for Ed Psyc 788 Internship
in Mental Health/Community Counseling (3) Action taken was with the
understanding that a written project is part of the evaluation of the
experience for Ed Psyc 787 and 788.
Motion passed.
GRADUATE FACULTY APPLICATIONS
Prior to acting on any graduate faculty applications, Council members
discussed minimal criteria for graduate faculty status.
Regular graduate faculty status was renewed for Michael Applequist,
Arnold Redman, Tom Schmidt, and G.K. Sharma.
Regular graduate faculty status was approved for David Franck and
Mary A. Lemons.
Adjunct status was approved for Randall Phillips, Brenda Scott,
Sandee Snead, and Mary C. White.
Applications for Coleman Crocker and Larry Joe Logan were tabled to
allow time for more documentation to be provided to the Council.
STUDENT REQUESTS
1. Patricia Thomas's request for an extension of time for Ed
Psyc 720 was approved.
2. Jong-Jau Yang repeated Mgt 720 without having the appropriate
approval. His request to allow the second grade to replace the first
grade was approved.
OTHER
1. Internet and on-line courses -- Kendall-Melton will address
this issue during the Spring semester.
2. Unclassified admission -- Motion to reinstate the
unclassified admission category which allows for one semester with a
maximum of 6 hours credit was passed with an immediate effective
date. When a student moves to Conditional status from the
Unclassified and/or non-degree admission category, the coursework
completed in the previous category may be used to fulfill the
requirements for Conditional admission.
3. TCGS update -- Jones reported on the recent TCGS meeting.
Upcoming TCGS publications include recruitment and retention of
graduate students, distance education and quality issues, and
graduate teaching assistantship preparation.
