The Paul Meek Library is a selective depository of approximately 100,000 U.S. government documents. These documents can cover any topic which might possibly concern the American people and can be in a variety of material types (e.g. pamphlets, maps, newsletters, scholarly publications) and may be in paper, microform, or electronic format.

In our library, most of these documents are classified by the Superintendent of Documents Classification which arranges publications together by individual agency or department and by type of publication. Some documents are included in the library's online catalog, but many more are not. To locate those not in the online catalog you will need to use the Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications.

The Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications is an index of U.S. Government Documents. Our collection of documents began in l957 when we became a depository, though we do have a few older documents. Our Monthly Catalog begins in l926. Up through l976, it is available in microfilm or paper. After l976 it is available in an easy-to-use CDRom format. Ask in the Documents Department for this.

The library also has a small collection of Agricultural Experiment and Extension Publications and some Tennessee State publications:

Tennessee State Documents: Most Tennessee state documents are cataloged and included on the Online catalog, but a few documents are kept in a separate collection. Ask about these in the Documents Department.

Agricultural Experiment and Extension Publications: This is a limited collection with documents from Tennessee going back to the early l900's and more recent publications from some of the other states.

Electronic Government Documents: We are constantly receiving new documents on CD Rom. Among those most often used are:

  • USA Counties: (C3.l34/6:) This contains all U.S. Counties with all types of statistics including data on economics, crime, education and health along with other information.
  • REIS: Regional Economic Information System : This disc contains all types of economic information on the states and counties.
  • NTDB (National Trade Data Bank): The Export Connection: (Cl.88:) This includes information on foreign traders, export and import statistics by country of origin or destination and by product, economic and demographic data on countries and more.
  • Statistical Abstract: (C3.l34:) This includes all those items contained in the paper index by that name and more.
