INDEXING DOCUMENTS
| Few government documents are indexed in the OPAC.
The Monthly Catalog
of United States Government Publications is the best tool to use in
searching for government documents. Paper copies of this are
located on index tables on the first floor. Early editions of this
are on microfilm in the Media center, but there are paper indexes for many
of those years located on the index tables. For the years from l976
to the present, this index is on CD Rom. To use this, ask in the Documents
Department for the disc. A person in the office will be glad to help
you with this. Since the Documents Department is not manned at night
or weekends, ask in the Reference Department for help when Documents is
closed. Monthly Catalog is a listing of government publications published within a given time period and is arranged alphabetically by publishing office up to July, l976, and after that by Superintendent of Documents classification order. Each issue contains an index for the documents included. (Up until the January, l974, issue there were only subject indexes, but beginning with l974, title and author indexes were added, and in July, l976, a Series/Report index was added. In l980, a Keyword in Context index was added.) There is an annual cumulative index and for, the most recent year, a semi-annual index. For the individual doing extensive searching in documents there is a Cumulative Subject Index to Monthly Catalog, l900-l970 and several smaller indexes covering l0 year periods as well as a Personal Author Index to Monthly Catalog, l941-l970. |
