Online Catalog

The Library's extensive collection of media holdings can easily be accessed by using one of the department's online public terminals, known as an OPAC, or Online Public Access Catalog. Our staff can quickly show you how to limit your author, subject or title searches to various forms of AV material. If you have not done so already, come by the department and let us help you become familiar with this technology.

Videotape Collection

The Paul Meek Library houses the area's most extensive educational and classic-film videotape collection. With 4,000 titles to choose from, users can access educational videos on almost any subject which supports the university curriculum. In addition, the Media Services Department also supports UTM's film history classes by offering the very best of classic Hollywood and international feature films, selected from a variety of 4-star filmographies. We are very proud of both collections, and invite you to browse our holdings through the library's OPAC. Most of these titles are available for circulation, although the media collection is not accessible through interlibrary loan.

Audio/Video/Microform Playback Facilities

Our department has a large public-service room used in part for storage of our extensive microfilm and microfiche collections. In addition, we have a separate viewing room for microforms, video cassettes, slides and other popular media formats. State-of-the-art media carrels and low-level lighting provide our users with all the privacy they need for viewing or listening to their individual academic assignments.

Media Classrooms

The new Paul Meek Library houses two separate media classrooms. The larger Ryan Seminar Room seats up to 60 students and is the primary media playback classroom on campus. In addition, we also have a smaller Library Instruction Room nearby which seats about 25 individuals. This room can be scheduled on a first-come basis if you would like for your students to receive formal instruction in learning to use the library. The Media Services Department is also responsible for scheduling and supporting UTM's two large academic auditoriums in Gooch Hall and the Humanities Building, where public address and media equipment can be set up for your use by members of our staff. If you need to schedule any of the above facilities, call us at x-7063 or x-7069.

Computer-Generated Slides

One of our departmental staff members uses an Procolor Premier film recorder to produce 35mm text slides in both the IBM and Macintosh environments. Faculty who currently work with PowerPoint 4.0 or higher can bring a diskette of their latest text slide project to the Media Services Department for transfer to Ektachrome slide film. We can also make slides for those working with Windows 9x/ME and Microsoft Office 2000. The exposed film is then given back to the faculty member for standard E-6 slide processing.

Other Photographic Services

The Media Services Department has been providing UTM faculty and students with optical (copy-stand) photographic services for over twenty years. We can create both black & white and color slides from almost any type of original up to 11 x 14 in size. In addition, we provide black & white print-making services for faculty members needing either 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 glossy prints.

Campus Equipment Repair

If problems develop with any of your departmental AV equipment, remember that the Media Services Department of the Library features a campus equipment repair service. Broken items are inspected and repaired free of charge if no parts are required, and should parts be needed, the costs are transferred to the requesting department with no additional fees of any kind. Although we do not operate a 'pickup' service for broken equipment, we will attempt to work with requesting departments to help with heavier items. Faculty needing equipment repaired may call Patrick Reavis at 7069 to discuss their needs.

Video Editing & Character Generation

Our department has a small character generator for use in making titles and credits in tandem with our existing VHS editing system. Though not of true broadcast quality, our video editing system will nevertheless allow you to produce cleanly-edited videos of your campus productions. We also have a limited number of VHS camcorders that can be checked out to you or to authorized students for taping academic-related projects. Make an appointment with us if you need assistance in this area; we'll help you in any way we can!

Educational & Entertainment Channels

The Library Media Services Department is responsible for Cable Channel 68, UTM's educational channel, and Channel 67, the university's entertainment channel. Media Services also works with the Communications Department to provide playback facilities for their student-produced news shows. Programming schedules for all UTM channels are listed on Channel 66 along with other university announcements.

CCTV Broadcast List

The Media Services Department has developed a Closed-Circuit Television list of educational videos owned by the library that may be broadcast over the campus TV network on Channel 68. In all, approximately 40% of the library's educational videos have been cleared for broadcast on Channel 68. If you would like a copy of the CCTV list to use in making viewing assignments, you may view video titles according to subject by clicking on the CCTV LIST link.
