Larry Thomas McGehee

(1971-1979)


Larry Thomas McGehee was the fourth executive administrator of the University of Tennessee presiding in office from 1971 to 1979. Dr. McGehee was born on May 18, 1936 in Paris, Tennessee to George Eugene McGehee and Margaret Elizabeth Thomas. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Transylvania College in 1958. He would attain his Bachelor of Divinity, Master of Arts and doctorate degrees from Yale University in 1963, 1964 and 1969 respectively. He began his career as Director and Assistant Vice President of University Relations at the University of Alabama in 1966. He rose to the position of Executive Assistant to the President from 1968 to 1969 and Executive Vice President from 1969 to 1971. He would leave the University of Alabama as the Academic Vice Chancellor.

In 1971, Dr. McGehee would be named the Chancellor of the University of Tennessee at Martin. He would hold the chancellorship for eight years before becoming the Special Assistant to the President of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1979. He left the University of Tennessee in 1982 to become the Vice President of Wofford College, a position that he still retains.
