Margaret N. Perry was the sixth Chancellor of the University
of Tennessee at Martin.
Appointed to the Chancellorship in 1986, she was the first women to serve
as an executive
officer in the University of Tennessee system.
Dr. Perry was born in Waynesboro, Tennessee on April 23, 1940. She received a Bachelor of
Science degree in Home Economics at the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1961. Two years
later she obtained a Master of Science degree in Nutrition from the University of Tennessee at
Knoxville. In 1965, she attained a doctorate from the same institution in Nutrition and Food
Science.
Her career in higher education began as a part time instructor in the Food Science Department at
Tennessee Tech University in 1963. In 1966, she was appointed a full time position as Assistant
Professor of Food Science and Food Systems Administration. She would also serve as the
Assistant Dean, later Associate Dean, of the College of Home Economics from 1967 to 1973.
From 1973 to 1979, Dr. Perry was the Dean of the Graduate Studies program at Tennessee Tech.
In 1979, she was appointed Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and continued retain
that position until 1986 when she accepted the chancellorship of the University of Tennessee at
Martin. In 1997, after eleven years as Chancellor, Dr. Perry retired. She
now resides with her family in Nashville.
