Brief History: The Carter House was purchased by the university for student housing in 1959. It was originally known as Carter's Motor Inn, which had been a local hotel in Martin since the 1930's. The building began housing students in the fall of 1960. It was primarily used as a dormitory for men and was designed to accommodate forty-five students. The name was changed to Shannon Hall in 1963. The building was sold by the university in 1967.
