INTRODUCTION
This guide was compiled to provide nursing students
with access to some major nursing and nursing-related reference sources
which can be found in the Paul Meek Library. This is not a comprehensive list, and
it does not include textbooks. Additional sources and other materials can be found
by searching the online catalog by subject. Below are some suggested subject headings
that you can use with our online catalog to locate additional sources.
At the main screen to the library automated

The last section of
this pathfinder will direct you to sources available on the Internet that may prove
helpful to students in the health-science areas. Obviously the list of sources glommed
from the Internet is not comprehensive but rather an example of the type of information
that is accessible.

Reader's Guide to
Alternative Health Methods.
Call #:R 733 .R4 1993 (Reference)
An analysis of more than 1,000 reports on unproven,
disproved, controversial, fraudulent, quack, and/or otherwise questionable approaches to
solving health problems. The aim of this work Is to identify and provide information on
alternative therapies and their promoters. Each section begins with an overview that
reflects the author's perspective on the subject, followed by citations to the literature
from medical, scientific, and consumer literature. Five appendixes provide information on
organizations skeptical and supportive of alternate health methods; there is a glossary of
alternative methods and terms.
Reference Sources in
Science, Engineering, Medicine and Agriculture.
Call #: Z 7401 .M278 1994 (Reference)
This cumulation of more than 2,400 titles aims not only
to be a bibliographic guide to the core literature, but also to cover a multi disciplinary
territory between the natural sciences, engineering, medicine, and agriculture. The author
provides both a reference guide to novice researchers and an up-to-date text for
information science students studying scientific bibliography. This work is not a
substitute for scientific guides to individual disciplines; rather it is a selective
introductory-level guide. This source evaluates 750 book and 79 popular magazines and
newsletters, and lists (some) 700 pamphlets, 30 health- information clearinghouses and
information centers, 103 toll-free hot lines, and 175 health-related organizations
providing educational or informational services to the public. It also lists 49
professional publications. In selecting materials, the compilers looked at the
qualifications of the author, content of the work, writing style and readability, ease of
use, pathways to further information, physical quality (binding, clarity of print, etc.),
consumer orientation, and appropriateness for the intended audience. A directory of book
publishers and author, title,
and subject indexes complete the source.

describing the contents. Nonprint materials, which account for approximately one-third of
the items listed, include films, tapes, recordings, and computer software.
Information given includes program format, running time, series title and accompanying
materials. Following the subject sections is a periodicals section. Periodical indexes are
listed first, followed by periodicals and then by yearbooks and annuals, all arranged by

the history of science. Entries are lengthy (few under one-page) and include

related to the sciences of nature or to mathematics.
Cambridge Dictionary of
Scientists.
Call #: Q 141 .C128 1996 (Reference)
A revision of Chambers Concise Dictionary of Scientists
(1989), this dictionary, like the Larousse Dictionary of Scientists, profiles a limited
number of the world's leading scientists, both past and present. More than 30 information
boxes with essays on topics such as the entry of women into astronomy, the history of
genetics, and AIDS and HIV are interspersed throughout the text and are included in the

which biography is being illustrated....

HarperCollins Illustrated Medical Dictionary.
Call #: R 121 .D76 1993 (Reference)
The detailed, scientifically labeled illustrations are
intended to preclude the need for lengthy definitions, most of which run only one or two
sentences and use fairly technical vocabulary. The definition-illustration combination
works in some cases, but not all. For example, definitions and the corresponding
illustrations for medical devices and instruments provide a clear understanding of the
terms. For other terms, dependence on the illustration to clarify the definition is less
successful.... (Amino acid) is defined as any organic acid containing one or more amino
groups and a carboxyl group; forms the essential component of proteins.' The corresponding
illustration is a double-page-spread chart of the chemical composition of the major amino
acids. No additional information is given. Definitions are supplemented by 2,500
sepia-and-black illustrations which run across the top of each page. Illustrated terms are
printed in color in the text to refer the user to the illustration. A list of
abbreviations and symbols; a list of prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms; and a
phonetic pronunciation guide precede the main body of the dictionary.
