Finding A Report of A Case

| Has a "Table of Cases" in Volume 35, which can be used as a title index. In it are all Tennessee cases listed alphabetically by plaintiff. Volume 36 has Tennessee cases listed alphabetically by defendant. So if you have a citation such as "Smith vs.Tennessee", for example, go to the Volume 35 noted above and search the "Table of Cases" for the case. If you don't find a reference to the case in the main volume, check the back of the book. The basic volumes of the Digest are updated yearly by inserts which are filed in a pocket inside the back cover of each volume. The entry for "Smith v. Tennessee" will contain a number of references. The reference 327 SW2d 308 is the one needed to find the report of the case in the South Western Reporter (Ref. KF 135 .S7). Locate volume 327 of the South Western Reporter (SW2d) in the Reference stacks and turn to page 308 (see next entry). | |

| Cited as SW2d, the first volume in this series was issued in 1928 and the series continues to the present. It contains reports of cases for Appelate and Supreme Courts of Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas. A citation such as 327 SW2d 308 noted in the previous entry means the case report can be found in volume 327 of the South Western Reporter 2d Series(SW2d) beginning on page 308. Cases cited "SW" are in the first series of the Reporter which terminated in 1928. These cases can be found in Tennessee Decisions (see next entry). | |
