AltaVista - searches Web sites and Usenet newsgroups with advanced Boolean and field search options.
Raging Search, its streamlined engine with a large index that takes link ranking into account
Babel Fish (and its Raging Search equivalent), the AltaVista translation service.
AOL.COM Search - engine that defaults to AND logic and offers a Search Options template for easy search construction; has an option to view results by popularity; offers a directory based on the Open Directory
Ask Jeeves - submit questions in plain English and view suggested relevant sites; also offers the Open Directory ranked in order of popularity
Deja.com - search postings to thousands of Usenet newsgroups; free registration is available for special services including discussion forums, spam-free e-mail accounts, and e-mail alerts about postings on topics (threads) of your choice
Direct Hit - retrieves documents in order of popularity, i.e., sites that users select from search results for a similar request; also available on HotBot and MSN Search. The Ask Jeeves search engine is also available on this site.
Excite - offers a "Precision Search" engine that organizes results by term ranking combined with link ranking; also has a directory search and searche functions for news, photos, and audio/video
FAST Search: All the Web, All the Time - returns results quickly from an extremely large database; responsible for the Lycos MP3 engine
FindSame - engine that matches any text from one page with the text on other pages on the Web; URLs or entire documents can also be submitted for a search
GO.com [formerly Infoseek] - searches Web sites, Usenet newsgroups, Reuters news, and companies with field search options; clusters results by presenting one hit per site; offers recommended and/or reviewed Web sites for certain topics.

MSN Search - derives results from a variety of sources, including the LookSmart directory, Direct Hit and others; applies concept matching to search statements; and offers an advanced search option with form-based field searching similar to HotBot

Specialty Search Engines
The so-called "invisible Web" consists of information stored in searchable databases mounted on the Web. These databases usually search a targeted topic or aspect of a topic. Search engine spiders cannot or will not index this information. The term "deep Web" is also used, and is a better term since the content is visible with the appropriate technology. The following is a selection of sites that collect searchable databases on the Web.

Domain Names
Amnesi: The Internet Name Search Engine - enter part or all of a domain name and retrieve a list of possibilities; includes information on the domain name registration from the InterNIC's Whois database, links to the home page sites, and links to FTP sites associated with the domain
Ask Reggie Standard Search and Ask Reggie International Search - search for domain names in the InterNIC's Whois database; Standard Search retrieves .com, .edu, .net, or .org and retrieves a list of domains and the entities which have registered them, while International Search checks if a domain is available>

  Checkdomain.com - search for the availability of a domain name in nearly every country of the world
