Online Catalog

The Library's extensive collection of media holdings can easily be accessed by using one of the department's online public terminals, known as an OPAC, or Online Public Access Catalog. Our staff can quickly show you how to limit your author, subject or title searches to various forms of AV material. If you have not done so already, come by the department and let us help you become familiar with this technology.

Videotape & DVD Collection

The Paul Meek Library houses the area's most extensive educational and classic-film videotape collection. With over 5,000 videos and nearly 1,400 DVDs to choose from, users can access educational videos on almost any subject which supports the university curriculum. In addition, the Media Services Department also assists UTM's film history classes by offering the very best of classic Hollywood and international feature films, selected from a variety of 4-star filmographies. We are very proud of both collections, and invite you to browse our holdings through the library's OPAC. Most of these titles are available for circulation, although the media collection is not accessible through interlibrary loan.

Audio/Video/Microform Playback Facilities

Our department has a large public-service room used in part for storage of our extensive microfilm and microfiche collections. In addition, we have a separate viewing room for microforms, video cassettes, DVD'S, slides and other popular media formats. State-of-the-art media carrels and low-level lighting provide our users with all the privacy they need for viewing or listening to their individual academic assignments.

In addition, we also have a smaller Library Instruction Room nearby which seats 24 individuals. This room can be scheduled on a first-come basis if you would like for your students to receive formal instruction in learning to use the library. The Media Services Department also shares responsibility for scheduling and supporting UTM's two large academic auditoriums in Gooch Hall and the Humanities Building, where public address and media equipment can be set up for your use by members of our staff. If you need to schedule any of the above facilities, call us at x-7063 or x-7069.

Picture Scanning Service

Many students are now required to create Powerpoint presentations as part of class assignments, and they often need to incorporate pictures which cannot be downloaded from the web -- personal photographs or shots from magazines and books. The Library Media Department has a scanning service for students needing pictures for their classroom presentations. Our photography assistant will scan the photos into jpg. files and save them into Power Point as required. Blank CDs and jump drives may be purchased at the Computer Store in the University Center.

Students may also scan pictures, etc. using the equipment at the multi-media workstations (mentioned below) and email the results to themselves or save on their jumpdrive, a paper print will cost 20 cents each.

Video Streaming of Academic Speakers

Beginning with the 2003-2004 academic year, all visiting academic speakers who have agreed to have their speeches included in the database can now be viewed online in streaming video format.  The Media Services Department hopes that you will find this useful as a teaching and learning resource or as a way to view speaker events that you could not attend in person. The Media Technician is responsible for creating and maintaining this site: http://www.utm.edu/staff/preavis/academicspeakers/
