Evaluating Information

Evaluating sources is a critical component in the research process. Determining the quality of the information is an important step when writing good research papers. Internet sources are very diverse and dynamic. Unlike print sources, web sites change constantly.

There are so many different types of information available that identifying and evaluating quality sources can sometimes be difficult.

The criteria in this checklist will help you to quickly and effectively identify and evaluate library and Internet information resources.

Author/Publisher

What is the author's educational background or experience?
Is s/he a journalist or a knowledgeable expert?
Is the material sponsored by an educational institution or by a corporation? 
Is the publisher commercial or academic?
What is the reputation of the sponsor or publisher?

Accuracy and Objectivity

Does the affiliation of the author influence the views presented? 
Is there a political perspective? 
Is there a cultural or religious bias? 
Are there advertisements on the page? 
Is the material well written and free of errors? 
Has the material been edited, verified or reviewed by others? 
Are sources cited? 
How were statistics or data collected, presented?

Currency

When was the source published?
Is currency important for your topic?
What time span is represented? 

Internet Sites

Who sponsors the site?
Is the site easy to use? 
Is the information current? 
How often is the site updated? 
What time span is represented? 
How does this site compare with others on the same subject?
Is the resource archived?
Is the information well organized and easy to find? 
If links to other sites are provided, do they work?
Are the formats and speed acceptable? 
Is the site searchable and is there an index or table of contents? 
Does the site require additional software or hardware?
Is the site reliable?

Intended Audience & Purpose

Who is the intended audience? 
Is the article written for the general public?
Is the language technical or filled with jargon?
Is the purpose to inform or persuade? 
Is the information promotional? 
Is the information copyrighted?

Bias

Is there a notable bias?
Is the information presented as fact, opinion, or propaganda?
Does the author document evidence to support their position?
Does the author try to be objective and impartial?
Are the adjectives used provocative or biased?
Does the author acknowledge sources?

Compare With Other Sources 

Are other sources better (books, periodicals, etc.)? 
Is there a cost for the service or material? 
Can the information be more easily obtained from another source? 
How useful is the information for your purpose?
