Dear alumni and friends,

I would like to take a moment to thank each of you for your support of UT Martin and our mission to serve students throughout Tennessee and beyond. In January, you will receive the latest issue of the Campus Scene, the UT Martin alumni magazine. In the issue, I discuss some of the following important items in detail and I hope you will take a moment to read the full article in the magazine. Some of the items are:

  • The Fall 2007 semester has been a mixture of positive, and in some instances, firsts for UT Martin. These milestones range from a fall headcount enrollment of 7,171 students, which is an all-time high, and an all-time high in annual giving for our campus.

  • Faculty accomplishments include a mixture of important five and six figure grants, increased publication, and national or regional level awards for faculty.

  • UT Martin student groups in agriculture, business, chemistry and military science received national or regional recognition for outstanding achievements.

  • This semester we celebrated Don Chapman, UT Martin's premiere running back, becoming the top rusher and scorer in Skyhawk history. The campus also received national attention when junior transfer Lester Hudson achieved a quadruple double which was the first such feat in Division I basketball history.

As we prepare to welcome 2008, I am pleased to announce the planned opening of UT Martin's Alumni Center in late January. The Office of Alumni Relations will be relocating to the facility known to many of you as the Chancellor's Residence. The Alumni Center will be home to events such as alumni reunions, board/council meetings, volunteer leadership conferences and many other events on campus. The location makes it very convenient for alumni and friends to visit campus when you return to UT Martin for alumni and university events.

The Alumni Center is only the beginning. Alumni involvement will be greatly enhanced by the realization that alumni now have a place to call “home.” I hope you will plan to visit your alma mater and your new alumni home during the upcoming year.

Sincerely,

Tom Rakes

Chancellor
