Questions for the

Captain

What is the Campaign for Tennessee?

The Campaign for Tennessee is the 3rd major capital campaign in the history of the University of Tennessee.
The 21st Century Campaign, conducted from 1994-1998, raised $432 million in private funds for the
university. The goal was $250 million.

The Campaign for Tennessee presents the opportunity to acquire resources from the private sector to enhance
our teaching and research programs, especially in those areas where public support cannot meet our needs.

Why is it necessary for the University of Tennessee at Martin to have a campaign?

The university is a state-assisted land-grant institution. State appropriations finance the basic necessities. As
with other leading public institutions, the University of Tennessee at Martin is increasingly reliant on private
support for scholarships, fellowships, professorships, instructional technologies, library resources and other
programs that the state cannot and does not fund. No university today can be competitive without private
support.

What is the campaign’s goal, and how was this goal established?

The fund-raising consulting firm Alexander, Haas & Martin interviewed hundreds of individuals about
the potential for private support for our institution. Their feasibility study report recommended a goal of
$1 billion over 7 years for the five University of Tennessee campuses. UT Martin’s goal is a minimum of
$40 million.

Who benefits from the campaign?

The state provides funding for necessary facilities. Campaign funds will provide merit and need-based
scholarships and fellowships for quality students; supplements to create competitive salaries for distinguished
faculty; and academic resources such as information technology, library materials and lab equipment.

May I designate my gift or commitment?

Yes. Some may wish to make an unrestricted commitment that will benefit the campus where the need is
greatest. Others may choose to designate funds for a specific college, department, program or fund.

Will my gift be treated confidentially?

Campaign volunteers will request that each pledge/gift card be returned in the business reply envelope
provided. The sealed envelope is opened only by personnel in the UT Martin Development Office who
process, acknowledge and record gifts.

If you desire complete anonymity, please make this request in writing on your pledge/gift card.

If I am currently giving to UT, what will be counted in the Campaign for Tennessee?

All gifts and campaign pledges made between Jan. 1, 2005 and December 30, 2011, will be counted in the
campaign. It is hoped that those already giving will make a special gift during the Campaign for Tennessee.
