Addendum to College E-Newsletter
We regret an oversight in mentioning plans for a reunion of home economics/family and consumer sciences alumni during Homecoming 2009 in celebration of the 100 th anniversary of the family and consumer sciences profession. Many activities have been planned including a special reunion banquet on October 10 th . For more information on activities, please contact The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at 731-881-7100.
You are cordially invited to join alumni, students and staff at The University of Tennessee at Martin 100 Year Celebration of Family and Consumer Sciences. This celebration will take place on Saturday, October 10 in conjunction with UT Martin's Homecoming festivities.
Events include: A special reunion tent in Quad City from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Recognition during the UT Martin Football game at 2:00 p.m. Tour of facilities and reception at 5:30 p.m. Dinner in the Boling University Center at 6:00 p.m.

Seven geosciences faculty have joined the Department of Agriculture, Geosciences and Natural Resources (AGNR). This brings the total number of personnel to 24 faculty and 9 staff.
The AGNR Department expanded into the new wing of Brehm Hall in August, 2009. This new space provides; 3 Teaching Classrooms / Lab 1 Lab Preparation Room 1 Media Room 1 Conference Room Student Lounge 5 offices During Homecoming, October 10, we will have an open house. I hope you can come and see for yourselves!
A new program in Geomatics/Land Surveying has been added to the Department of AGNR, and we've used Stimulus funds to hire Dr. Sandy Mehlhorn to get the program off to a good start.
The college has received over $600,000 of Stimulus funds, most of which will be used to buy large new equipment to replace outdated items.
The Department of Military Science and Leadership (MSL) commissioned five (5) new officers during the spring commencement.
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) has completed putting its MS degree online - - the MS in FCS. This makes the second online degree program for the college - - the other is the MS in ANR.
Dr. Nancy Warren has chosen to go back to the classroom full time. The search for a new chair of the Department of Nursing will begin this fall. Meanwhile, Dr. Vicki Seng will serve as interim chair, with Ms. Ruby Black and Ms. Shirley Fry as co-vice chairs.
Dr. Jim Byford, dean of the college, will retire December 31, 2009. At this time, an interim dean has not been named.
Dr. Sue Byrd has been elected national president of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
This summer Dr. Joey Mehlhorn led a group of students to Mexico for an in-depth Spanish language immersion experience.
Next May, Dr. Sue Byrd and Dr. Brad Ray will lead a group of students to Brazil to study life around the Amazon River.
Mrs. Debbie Hunter, Administrative Assistant in the Dean's office, was named Outstanding UTM Employee this spring.
We are working with Dyersburg State Community College to develop a cooperative program, whereby agriculture students can be enrolled at both campuses concurrently - - first completing an Associate Degree at DSCC, then a BS in Agriculture degree at UTM. During the first two years, students will take UTM agriculture courses at the same time they are taking DSCC courses. We already have a similar program at Jackson State Community College.
