The CAAS is searching to fill a new grant coordinator position - - a person to help faculty write and administer grants. For more information, please contact the college at 731-881-7250.

 

 

Agriculture and Natural Resources

 

•  Brehm Hall expansion will go out for bid in March, 2008.

 

•  Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory construction is complete - - opened in February 2008.

 

•  Dr. Clay Bailey joined the faculty January 2008. He is teaching animal science courses and will coach the UT Martin Livestock Judging Team.

 

•  The UT Martin Clay Target Team is off and running, coached by Steve Vaughn. It will compete in a number of events in 2008, including an intercollegiate event in San Antonio.

 

•  Dr. Tom Greer retired in December 2007 - - a retirement dinner was hosted on February 9, 2008.

 

•  The department is searching to fill Dr. Greer's position in agriculture economics, and a new fisheries/aquaculture position.

 

•  Plans are underway for the fifth class of Tennessee Governor's School for the Agricultural Sciences, held on the UT Martin Campus.

 

•  Dr. Rich Joost was asked to write and has completed a chapter titled “Conservation” in the new Tall Fescue monograph to be published by the American Society of Agronomy next spring. He is serving on the Board of Directors of CAST as the representative of NACTA, which began in March 2007.

 

•  Dr. Paula M. Gale is Chair-elect Division S-10 (Wetland Soils) of the Soil Science Society of America - Chair-elect for 2008 and will serve as chair in 2009.

 

•  Initiated dual-enrollment classes with three high schools via Apreso Technology.

 

•  Implemented Agricultural Engineering Technology concentration.

 

•  Worked with Department of Engineering and Department of Geology, Geography and Physics to establish Land Surveying Option in Agricultural Engineering Technology Concentration to provide students with courses and experiential skills required for certification.

 

•  Added agricultural communications option in agricultural science

 

•  Established farm and ranch management option in agricultural business concentration.

 

•  Worked with Department of Chemistry to develop new chemistry sequence for most department students.

 

•  Submitted grant proposals ($850,000 total) to USDA and Tennessee Department of Agriculture to fund expansion to Ray and Wilma Smith Livestock Merchandising Center.

 

•  Dual-credit courses (animal science) were offered at Munford, Brighton and Halls High School (18 total students), Fall, 2007 semester.

 

•  Established fisheries option in the wildlife biology concentration to meet critical needs in aquaculture and natural resources management.

Family and Consumer Sciences

 

•  Dr. Marti Herndon currently serves on both the State Interagency Coordinating Council for Tennessee's Early Intervention System and the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth. She was appointed to these by the governor.

 

•  Dr. Georgina Awipi serves on the Tennessee Board of Nutrition and Dietetics. She was appointed by the governor.

 

•  Dr. Sue Byrd serves as the chair of the Council for Certification of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She also serves as the community leader for the College, Universities and Research Section of AAFCS.

 

•  The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences has developed the first phase of a plan to offer its M.S. degree online. First online courses will be offered Fall 2008.

Master of Science in Agriculture and Natural Resources

 

•  Seventeen new students were admitted in summer and fall 2007. Of these, eight selected systems science in agriculture and nine selected natural resources systems management.

 

•  The Natural Resources Systems Management (NRSM) concentration is offered through the Natural Resources Distance Learning Consortium (NRDLC). The consortium is directed by Virginia Tech and includes these member institutions: Northern Arizona University, Penn State University, Steven. F. Austin University, The University of Idaho, The University of Montana, Oregon State University, North Carolina State University and UT Martin.

Nursing

 

•  Full Accreditation was received from the Tennessee State Board of Nursing in September 2007, after a site visit by Martha Barr – associate executive director, Tennessee State Board of Nursing.

 

•  RN to BSN Program at Parsons Center is up and running. Classes on Black Board are in place, and will graduate the first class in May 2008.

 

•  LPN to BSN program at Parsons Center began spring semester 2008.

 

•  RN to BSN Program at Ripley Center continues to grow.

 

•  Shirley Fry was visiting professor to Hirosaki University, in Japan.

 

•  Mississippi Delta Special Initiative project (CFDA 93.912) funded by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). “Bridging the Gap: A Behavior Change Curriculum for Healthcare Providers” was a collaborative effort of Ruby Lindsey Black, Jo Margaret Aden, Diane Austin, Esther Christian and Peggy Davis.
