News from the College of Business

and Public Affairs...

Dear College of Business and Public Affairs alumni,

When I was an entering freshman, I could not afford school without loans. With hard work I am still thankfully able to say that I do not have to depend on loans as a means to pay for my education. My hard work mixed with the enormous amount of scholarships (like the William H. Baker scholarship that I received for my senior year) available to students provided me the opportunity to acquire my education at a great price. Work studies, the PEP program, and scholarships definitely gave me not only a college experience, but the UT Martin experience!

Brad Kendall,
Senior Finance major

College of Business and Public Affairs returns to the Business Administration Building

In June, the College moved back to the Business Administration building after residing on the third floor of Clement Hall for the previous 13 months. While the major reason for undertaking the $3.2 million project was to replace the well-aged heating and air conditioning systems in the building, the project included replacing the wiring in the building as well as the installation of new ceilings, lighting and pipes installed. New carpet and fresh paint completed the project and made the building look almost new. In addition to the HVAC project, the College was able to substantially enhance the technology in the building. The original wireless system for computers in the building was replaced; new projectors, screens (electric), document cameras, and podiums that control all technology in the room were placed in each of the classrooms. The building looks great!

Retirements

After 42 years on campus, Dr. Kay Durden has fully retired. Technically, Dr. Durden retired two years ago, however she continued teaching two courses each semester as part of the University of Tennessee's Post-Retirement Program. The University community celebrated Dr. Durden's complete retirement with a banquet (and roast) on May 18, 2008, attended by hundreds of friends and colleagues. In the weeks surrounding the banquet, checks and pledges totaling almost $30,000 were received by the University for the Kay Durden Scholarship Endowment. Kay's love of the University and commitment to her students were evident in everything she did. She will be sorely missed!

Three faculty members begin the steps toward full retirement:

Dr. Robert Putman, Professor of Accounting

Dr. Richard Chesteen, Professor of Political Science, announced their retirements effective December 31, 2007, and joined the Post-Retirement Program. They will teach half-time (two courses) each semester for up to two years.

In June, Dr. Robert Hearn, Professor of Business Law, announced his retirement, effective at the end of the fall semester of 2008. Dr. Hearn is the College's only full-time teacher in business law, and, subject to the approval of the University of Tennessee, will teach in the Post-Retirement Program beginning in the spring semester of 2009. Dr. Hearn is the last of fourteen original members of the faculty in the School of Business to retire. Pictures of these 14 visionary men and women grace the walls of the Dean's Conference Room in the BA Building

New Faculty join the CBPA

The opening of the fall semester, 2008, and the move into the renovated building saw four faculty members join the existing 37 faculty in supporting the CBPA mission of quality education. These additions include:

Dr. Brandon Kilburn, who holds the PhD in management from the University of Memphis, was appointed to a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Management. Dr. Kilburn. Brandon served UT Martin last year as Lecturer in Management, a nontenure-track position while a national search was conducted.

Dr. Janice Hanna holds the PhD in marketing from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was appointed to a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Marketing. Dr. Hanna spent the last 20 years in professional marketing, much of that time as a marketing manager with AT&T at their headquarters in New York.

Dr. Karen Moffitt was appointed to the CBPA faculty as Assistant Professor of Management (a tenure track position). Dr. Moffitt holds the PhD in management from the University of Memphis and taught last year at Radford University in Virginia.

Dr. Mary Cook-Wallace joined the faculty as Lecturer in Information Systems. Dr. Wallace holds the PhD from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and has extensive experience in enhancing, managing, and developing on-line courses using video conferencing.

Mr. Shawn Nanney holds the MS degree from the University of Southern Mississippi where he is currently working on a PhD in political science. Mr. Nanney was appointed Lecturer in Political Science for the current year. Last year, Mr. Nanney taught courses in leadership on a half time basis for the CBPA while organizing leadership-related activities for the Division of Student Life.

CBPA Faculty Lead the University in Percentage of Faculty with intellectual contributions

While maintaining the college's excellent reputations for teaching and for helping students, 31 of the 40 faculty members (including those in the Post-Retirement Program) had intellectual contributions during calendar year 2007. 17 articles appeared in refereed journals (the highest form of intellectual contribution) during 2007 and another 14 were accepted for publication in 2008 and 2009. 35 articles were published in the Proceedings of regional, national, and international professional conferences and another 17 papers were presented at conferences that did not publish proceedings.

Regional Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (REED) Center Activities 2007-2008

The REED Center is the major outreach and economic development arm of the CBPA and partners the College of Business and Public Affairs, the Dunagan Chair of Excellence in Banking and the Hendrix Chair of Excellence in Free Enterprise with the City of Martin, the counties of Carroll, Gibson, Henry, Obion, and Weakley, regional banks and the Tennessee Small Business Development Centers.

During 2007-08, the REED Center sponsored 16 programs directly related to new and existing small businesses plus another 4 general presentations. The 20 programs involved a total of 350 people who spent an average of two hours each learning about the opportunities and challenges of owning a small business. In addition, REED Center personnel served 75 clients in one-on-one consultations (usually meeting with each client three times). Since its opening in August, 2005, REED Center clients have reported 147 new jobs created in the region!

Advising Center a Hit with Students

Ms. Sheryl Breeden, MBA, has completed her first year as advising coordinator for the College. During the year, Ms. Breeden oversaw 153 freshmen business majors and continues to advise those students (now sophomores) who have not yet chosen a business major. She now has a whole new group of advisees as the 2008 freshman class is now on campus. Ms. Breeden is available year-round and is also the first point of contact for international students and for students transferring into the college. Her availability, knowledge of the curricula in the college and university, and personality have made Ms. Breeden a favorite of all students (most of whom she knows on a first name basis) in the College.
