News from the College of Education

and Behavioral Science...

Dear College of Education and Behavioral Sciences alumni,

The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences has as its primary mission the preparation of a diverse clientele of students through a variety of program offerings which meet state, regional, and national accreditation standards for either entry into the world of work or further academic study at the graduate level. Those who choose to enter the world of work include those prepared to teach and perform other school service functions, as well as, others who may choose to embark upon careers in such public service areas as business, government, social and psychological services, personnel management, and the criminal justice system. Those who continue academic study at the graduate level may pursue a degree leading to leadership certification in education or an advanced degree in a wide range of occupations.

Faculty members in the college had a very busy academic year during 2006-2007 with presentations, publications, and service to their department, college, and university. Students also were involved in service projects to benefit children and adults in our local community. Students were honored with awards for research and service. It is with a great sense of pride that I let our alumni share in the successes of a very hard working and productive faculty and an engaged student body. The activities faculty and students participated in last year truly support the mission.

Thank you for your continued support of our college.  Please email me at mlhall@utm.edu should you have any questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Mary Lee Hall, Dean

Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice

The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice has had a very productive year. Our students and faculty have been traveling, researching, and serving the community. We are very proud that the department recently completed much hard work lead by Dr. Judy Maynard and Dr. Donna Anderson culminating in a successful self-study review.

The department has hosted several functions on campus this year. In the spring, the Social Work Alumni Banquet welcomed back our graduates with 110 guests attending, Criminal Justice Day was held with numerous attendees and a record number of criminal justice agencies participating. Also, in May, we hosted the 2nd Annual Regional Foster Parent Conference.

We are very proud of our students' scholarship. Dr. Sultan mentored students who presented at two conferences last fall.

1. Jayme D. Crawford, KeAuri K. Loftin and Misty L. Schrems presented papers at the Mid-South Sociological Association in Lafayette , LA.

2. Last November, Caroline Tippens, Natasha Nichols Bell, Amber Williams, and Randy Huff presented papers at the Tennessee Undergraduate Social Science Symposium at MTSU.

3. Faculty continue to present research at regional and national conferences.

Our department offered two travel study opportunities in the last year. Last summer Dr. Dawood Sultan took 8 students on a 15 day travel study to Tanzania and other areas of Africa . In the spring semester, criminal justice faculty traveled with fourteen students to Washington D. C. on a Criminal Justice travel study opportunity. In April, fifty social work students and faculty traveled to Nashville for two days to present research at the National Association of Social Workers Legislative Conference.

The Student Social Work Association, Alpha Delta Mu, ALLIES, and the Criminal Justice Society continue to provide leadership and educational opportunities to our students as they each contribute to the university and community. Participation in Homecoming projects and providing community services to nursing homes, child abuse prevention agencies, child protection agencies, schools, and Special Olympics were only a few of the projects that students were involved in last year.

The department will be contacting alumni in the next year to hear your feedback on how we may better serve our students and alumni. Please give us your input!
