College of Education and Behavioral Sciences

Spring 2009

A Message From the Dean

To our CEBS Alumni:

As you read the accomplishments of our faculty over the past few months, you will note that the faculty in each department in the college have continued to be quite productive!  We are honored to have so many who have presented on a national and international level and who have garnered teaching and research awards.  Through a restructuring during the past academic year, we have a new department, Behavioral Sciences, which includes Criminal Justice, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology.  The college has already taken over the coordination and delivery of the Bachelor of University Studies degree, a degree established to meet the needs of the non-traditional student who may have dropped out of college years ago and would like to complete a degree without starting all over again!  I am excited about this degree and the opportunity to market it in the Delta region.  A lot of the courses are online, allowing someone with a full time job and family to pursue a college degree.

As we begin our new academic year, I am committed to setting up an Advisory Committee of distinguished alumni to assist in determining the direction of the college for the future. I also want the group to help me get the word out about all the wonderful teaching, service, and research occurring in the college.  The faculty and staff are very busy and that is noted as you read our current e-newsletter. If you are interested in serving in this role, please contact me at mlhall@utm.edu or 731-881-7127.  I would like to set up a meeting during Homecoming weekend, October 10-11.

~Dr. Mary Lee Hall

Susan Buckelew

The following article was published in the June edition of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback.   (2009), volume 34 (2) , pages 99-103: “Awake EEG disregulation in good compared to poor sleepers” by Susan P. Buckelew, Douglas E. DeGood, Kristyn D. Roberts, Jessica D. Butkovic, & Angie S. MacKewn. This is an international interdisciplinary journal and represents a collaborative research effort between UTM and University of Virginia (DeGood).  The paper was also presented at the annual meeting of the AAPB (Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback) in April 2009 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  This research was partially funded by a UTM research grant.

Nancy Sonleitner

Dr. Sonleitner gave a presentation at the Southern Sociological Society meeting held April 1-4, 2009, on Western Assumptions in a Non-Western Educational Environment. The meeting was held in New Orleans.

She took two student researchers to the conference who also presented their research. Tammi Evans presented her research on the Effects of Sleep Deprivation on the Academic Performance of College Athletes vs. Non-Athletes. Mary Mason presented her research on What Makes People Happy and How Stress Affects Happiness.

Dr. Sonleitner is continuing to analyze data from the research project she is conducting with Deborah Gibson on the Effects of the Quantity and Quality of Sleep on Academic Performance in College Athletes and Non-Athletes.
