AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS

Spring 2013

All UT-Martin students interested in performing in either the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band or Jazz Band should sign up for an audition on the bulletin board outside Clement 452. This audition is required for entrance into the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band. The Concert Band is open to all students and this audition will serve only to place musicians within sections.

 

Excerpts will be available on the University Bands website: utm.edu/bands. In addition to the prepared excerpts, there will be a short sight reading excerpt that will be on the stand when you enter the room. In order to be unbiased, auditions will be blind – you will play your excerpts behind a screen and not see the panel. Please refrain from speaking. All wind auditions will be held in Clement 471 (Chamber Ensemble Room). Percussion auditions will be held in the University Center Percussion Studio.

 

If You Are Not a Music Major

We welcome students who are not music majors to audition for any of our concert ensembles.

 

Reference Recordings

Reference recordings for the pieces from which the audition excerpts are extracted are on reserve in the Paul Meek Library. Please consult these recordings for style and performance practice questions. Feel free to use NAXOS and Spotify, as well. Beware of performance quality when consulting YouTube recordings.

 

Jazz Band

Auditions for placement into Jazz Band will take place concurrently with Wind Ensemble auditions. If you wish to be considered for a chair in the Jazz Band, please prepare the included Jazz excerpt. Contact Dr. Gorman for more information.
