The Department of Biological Sciences provides a diverse, rigorous program with a curriculum designed to produce scientifically literate majors and non-majors knowledgeable in contemporary issues in biology. The department offers opportunities for experiential learning through close student/faculty research collaboration. We prepare our students for post-graduate programs and careers in the life sciences and health professions. The public service activities of the department are primarily directed to the regional needs of West Tennessee.

The Biology Degree Program

The Department provides a dynamic curriculum with three concentrations of study within the major to satisfy the academic needs and career goals of a diverse student body. A minor is also available.

Expected Outcomes:

At the time of graduation, a biology graduate will have the ability to:

  1. Define and explain fundamental elements of cell biology, organismal biology, and ecology.
  2. Define and explain how concepts of genetics and evolution influence biological diversity.
  3. Demonstrate effective written scientific communication skills.
  4. Demonstrate effective oral scientific communication skills.
  5. Apply the scientific process to natural phenomena.
