Dr. James L. Byford, Dean |

Dr. Jim Byford is Dean of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He received a B.S. degree (with high honors) from The University of Tennessee, Martin in general agriculture in 1966. He received a Ph.D. degree at Auburn University in 1970, majoring in wildlife biology, with minors in forest ecology and fisheries biology. He worked at Auburn University for 3 years (graduate research assistant and lab instructor); the University of Georgia for 3 years (Assistant Professor in Extension); and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville for 16 years (Assistant, Associate, and full Professor/Associate Department Head/Interim Department Head/Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries).
Dr. Byford has served as dean at UT Martin for 17 years - - making a total of 33 years at the Knoxville and Martin campuses of the UT System. His experience spans all three service areas of land grant university responsibilities - - teaching, research, and public service. He cooperates regularly on joint projects with other Tennessee campuses, in both the UT and Board of Regents systems.
Over the last several years, he has given 61 invited presentations in 26 different states, Ecuador, and Japan. He gives 35 to 40 presentations off-campus each year, mostly in Tennessee. He currently serves on six government, industry, and service organization advisory boards.
He has received numerous local, state, and national awards related to agriculture, wildlife, youth education, conservation, and communications. He grew up in Gibson County, Tennessee - - between Trenton and Humboldt. |
