Travel Interstate - 40 West, exit the interstate at Highway 22 at Parker's Crossroads (Exit 108). Follow Highway 22 North to Martin.

Traveling from Memphis
Travel Interstate - 40 East to Jackson, Tennessee, and exit the interstate at the Highway 45 By-Pass (Exit 80-B). Follow Highway 45 North to Martin.

What to bring/What not to bring

Vehicles/Bicycles

You are discouraged from driving to Governor's School. However, if it is absolutely necessary for you to do so, your car keys must be turned over to a staff member the day of arrival. You are not allowed to drive a vehicle during the TGSAS program. Your keys will be returned to you on the day of departure. As UT Martin is a walking campus, and as staff provides all transportation during the program, you are also discouraged from bringing a bicycle.

Clothing

The months of May and June are usually quite warm in Martin. We recommend that you dress casually and comfortably (but discreetly) for daily activities. Blue jeans, t-shirts and walking shorts are acceptable; indecent or offensive clothing, however, will not be permitted. All buildings are air-conditioned, so you might want to bring a sweater or sweatshirt if you tend to be cold. More formal clothing (a dress for ladies and a coat and tie for men) will be needed for the opening and closing banquets and other special occasions. On field trips, jeans or other long pants and long sleeve shirts may be necessary. Bringing insect repellent and an umbrella or poncho would be a good idea.

Money

All basic expenses related to the program, including room, meals, admission to cultural and social events, recreation fees, transportation on field trips, tuition and required books, are paid for by TGSAS. It is advisable, however, to bring a limited amount of money for the laundry facilities, snacks and personal items. There will be a shuttle each weekend to a nearby shopping center and to downtown Martin. You will have the chance to do light shopping at various stores, catch a movie or visit various restaurants. The Campus Bookstore has a wide variety of items, including souvenirs, which may interest you. Large amounts of spending money are both unnecessary and undesirable. Travelers' checks are the safest and easiest way to bring money to the School. There are ATMs located across from the cafeteria in the University Center. These machines will accept ATM cards, Visa and Visa Check Cards. You will not be able to cash personal checks.

Computers

Each scholar will be issued a Tablet PC to be used during the duration of Governor’s School. Scholars will be able to use the Tablets for course work and everyday personal use. Students will have access to email and the Internet during the duration of TGSAS.

Musical Instruments, Sports Equipment, Cameras

Bring musical instruments if you think it would be appropriate; there will be free time for you to practice if you so desire. We will have a café house and talent show, so bring your instrument, your music (CD or cassette) for vocals, or, if you have an unusual hobby or ability, whatever you might need to share it with others (within reason).

You might also want to bring sporting gear such as swimsuits, beach towels, tennis equipment and running shoes. UT Martin offers excellent recreational facilities, both indoor and outdoor. Bring a pair of headphones if you intend to use the Fitness Center. If you run or jog, bring your running shoes. There is a one and a half mile physical fitness trail that includes exercise stations. You will also have an opportunity to utilize the Olympic-sized pool, tennis courts, indoor running track, aerobic rooms, racquetball courts and fitness center.

You will probably want to bring a camera to commemorate your academic and social experiences. The TGSAS staff will be taking digital photos documenting the TGSAS experience. You will be given a picture CD with all the staff pictures.

The Governor's School for the Agricultural Sciences will supply basic school supplies such as pencils, college-ruled notebook paper and notebooks. If you have a favorite type of pen, pencil or writing paper, you may want to bring your own supply of these. A backpack or briefcase will be useful for carrying books and supplies to class.

Other Personal Items

You may want to bring an alarm clock, to avoid missing breakfast or morning classes. A desk lamp is acceptable. You will of course need personal items such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, stationery and stamps. Tablet PC Computers will be provided for word processing, sending e-mail and accessing the Internet, so you should not bring a personal computer or word processor to the School. You are also not allowed to bring the following items: TVs, VCRs, microwaves or refrigerators. Your Counselor will have access to a refrigerator, if needed. As noted, you will need to bring a telephone if you want one in your room. Scholars can bring and use a cell phone during TGSAS. However, these are not be used during classroom and other inappropriate times.

Visitation Policy

Because we have a full schedule of activities planned, we must ask that parents and friends abide by a "no outside visitors" policy. Friends and other unauthorized visitors will not be permitted in classes, in the residence hall, or on any trips or other activities of the school.

Family Weekend

Scholars will be permitted to leave campus for the Family Weekend. The 2010 Family weekend will be scheduled before the beginning of the 2010 class. We will have planned activities for Scholars who choose not to leave campus during Family Weekend. The faculty, staff and counselors will be on campus and have planned activities for scholars who choose to stay on campus.

Religious Services

Insofar as it is logistically feasible, every effort will be made to ensure students who want to attend religious services on Sunday mornings are able to do so.

The following churches are within walking distance of the campus:

St. Jude Catholic Church (731-587-9777)
Trinity Presbyterian Church (731-587-9718)

The Governors School staff will arrange transportation to the following churches:

First Assembly of God, Martin (731-587-6349)
First Baptist Church, Martin (731-587-9555)
Martin Church of Christ (731-587-2203)
First United Methodist Church, Martin (731-587-2689)
Crosswind Church, Union City

Faith Lutheran Church, Union City (731-885-9562)

Advance written permission from parents or guardian is required. You will receive an Authorization to Leave Campus for Religious Services that needs to be returned to the TGSAS office prior to the commencement of the 2008 program.

Curfew

A curfew has been established both for your safety and to encourage responsibility. On weekday evenings (Sunday through Thursday), you must be in the residence hall by 10:30 p.m., on your floor by 11 p.m., and in your room by 11:00 p.m. On weekend evenings (Friday and Saturday), you are required to be in the residence hall by 11 p.m. and in your room by midnight. You will check in with your Resident Counselor by 10:30 p.m. (11 p.m. on weekends) to verify that you are in the building. After checking in, you are not to leave the building, and after 11:00 p.m. on weekday evenings and midnight on the weekends, you are not to leave your suite until the next morning.

Safety

The University of Tennessee at Martin offers a stimulating and challenging educational experience on a beautiful campus setting. The faculty and staff are committed to the goal of providing a hassle-free stay that is as safe as possible on a campus that offers the opportunity for intellectual growth. You will also be pleased to know that the Martin community has a low crime rate. The citizens of the area realize UT Martin offers expanded educational, cultural and health facilities, and the campus-community relationship is close. The University of Tennessee at Martin has been rated as the sixth safest campus community in the country. Crime at College, The Student Guide to Personal Safety, by Curtis Ostrander and Joseph Schwartz, also rated the UT Martin community as the second safest college town in the South and the number one rated campus community in Tennessee. The University strives to be a safe community, with wide, well-lit walking paths. You can significantly help maintain your own safety while at UT Martin, however, by following security policies and using common safety practices; these would include securing valuables, walking in groups, watching for suspicious activity and reporting even minor violations. Common sense is always in order to assure your own safety as well as that of others. For safety after dark, we suggest that you walk in groups of two or more when you are out of the dorm. You should never go into another dorm or residence hall for any reason. Scholars are not permitted to be off-campus without permission from the Director or one of the Coordinators and must be in their dorm by 10:30 p.m. each night (11 p.m. on weekends). At that time, the residence hall will be closed for the safety of the Scholars. There will be someone on duty at the front desk 24 hours a day in the event you need assistance.

Emergency Situations

In any emergency situation, students should notify campus security immediately. The UT Martin Police Department operates on a 24-hour basis. You should report any suspicious activity or emergency by phoning 911 (for emergencies), 7777 (University Police) or, if you are off-campus, 587-7777. The University Police will answer all calls placed from a campus telephone to 911.

Uniformed officers make themselves visible during patrol. While staying in the dorm, you should report any incidents or concerns to your Counselor, the Head Resident or the Assistant Head Resident. These workers can get to a telephone quickly. Some carry radios and can contact the University Police directly.

In the event of a medical emergency, you should notify your Counselor, the Head Resident, the Director, one of the Coordinators or Campus Police. They will arrange for proper treatment. If you need outpatient treatment for a minor illness or injury (during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.), you will be taken to University Student Health Services. The Governor's School provides the cost of this service. After 4 p.m., or in case of a major medical emergency, you will be taken to Volunteer Community Hospital, which is within five minutes of the campus. Major medical treatment is the individual responsibility of you and your parents or guardians.

Emergency Contacts

In an emergency, you can be contacted directly. (Your number will be available when you check in.) If you are in class or involved in an elective, plenary or other activity, messages may be left with the TGSAS staff. A contact list of TGSAS personnel will be given to scholars and family members upon check-in.

FACILITIES

Residence Halls

You will stay in Browning Hall, located on the south end of the campus, south of the Boling University Center and near Clement Hall. This residence hall has a lobby area that separates the two sides of the building. A front desk that serves as a 24-hour information station and handles maintenance needs and emergency situations is located in the lobby. The lobby also has an area for residents to get together and "hang out." The basement provides laundry facilities and a TV lounge. Vending machines are available in both the lobby and the basement. Double locks are on all room doors, and bathroom access doors have single locks. These air-conditioned rooms are arranged as four-person suites, with each suite having two bedrooms and a connecting bathroom. Sheets, a blanket and a pillow will be provided. Bed linens will be exchanged on a weekly basis. You will need to bring towels and washcloths from home. We suggest you bring beach towels for swimming. Men and women are housed on separate floors, and there are Resident Counselors on each floor to guide and help Scholars.

Keys

You will be assigned a residence hall room key. For safety reasons, please be sure to lock your doors each time you leave your room, even when you leave for "just a minute." The University cannot be responsible for theft or damage to participants' possessions. Your dorm key must be turned in at checkout. There is a $10 charge for lost or unreturned keys. Participants will be responsible for this fee.

Telephones

Each dorm room has a standard telephone jack, and you are welcome to bring your personal phone for use during the Governors School program. This phone may be used for calls on campus, for local service and to receive outside calls. Participants may make long-distance calls on a collect basis, or through the use of a long distance credit card. Participants cannot accept collect calls. As a courtesy to roommates, calls should be limited to 15 minutes and not received or made after midnight. You may bring a cell phone, but it may not be taken to classes or plenary sessions or used after midnight.
