Aquatic Programs and Information
The Aquatic Program offers a wide variety of recreational and instructional programs including handicap access, lap swim, recreational swim, swim lessons, lifeguard classes, birthday parties, and fitness incentive programs. These programs are offered to students, faculty, staff and community. Our Olympic size swimming pool (25 yards by 50 meters) has a water depth of 3.5 to 5.0 feet in the shallow area, 6 feet in the mid section (lap swim area), and 12 feet in the diving well, which has a one-meter diving board. The temperature is kept at 84 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. For more information call (731) 881-7745.

Costs
Access to the Elam Center Pool can be gained by purchasing a $3.00 daily pass (children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by someone 16 years or older). Community memberships to the pool are available for $98.00 per year, $65 for six months or $45 for three months. Students, Faculty and Staff can gain free access by showing their official University ID. Immediate family of a student, faculty or staff member may purchase a pass for $45.00 per year. Senior citizen (60 and over) swim passes are $50.00 per year. Ages 2 and under are free when accompanied by a paying adult.
Fitness swim
Fitness swim is lap swim and shallow water exercise only. Children are only permitted if participating in lap swim. Lanes are first come first serve. You are encouraged, however, to share lanes when they are full.
Recreational Swim
Recreational swim includes free play in the shallow area, fitness swim in the lanes, and. diving board activities in the deep end.
Pool Parties
Book a party today! Parties can be booked during regular recreation hours at a cost of $3.00 per person; or you can book a private party in two-hour time slots. For booking information please call the Office of Campus Recreation at (731) 881-7745.
Aquatic Classes
Join one of our hydrobics classes! Hydrobics is a non-academic exercise program in which anyone can participate no matter what his/her fitness level may be. Classes are held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00-10:00 am at a cost of $65 per semester and Tuesday, Thursday from 5:30-6:30 pm at a cost of $50 per semester. Individuals must be 18 years or older to participate in a hydrobics class.
Swim Lessons
Let us teach your child proper aquatic skills! A certified water safety instructor teaches all lessons. If interested please contact the Office of Campus Recreation at (731) 881-7745 to set up your lesson.
*Private Swim Lesson’s
Private lessons are taught at a cost of $10 for 30 minutes, $15 for 45 minutes, and $20 for 1 hour.
*IPAP Classes (Infant and Preschool Aquatic Program)
The IPAP class helps young children 6 months to 5 years become comfortable in the water so they are ready to learn to swim. This program is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or survive in the water on their own. An adult must participate in the class with the child. Cost $40 per session per child.
Session 1 June 9- June 19 Monday-Thursday 6:00-6:30 pm
Session 2 July 7- July 17 Monday-Thursday 6:00-6:30 pm
Lifeguard Training Class
Become a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard and be trained in CPR, First Aid, and AED. All participants must be 15 years of age and must pass a pretest, which includes a 300-yard swim and 10 lb. weight test. The cost of this class is $130, which includes your book, pocket mask, and 2 certification cards. Space is limited and is on a first come first, serve basis. Lifeguard Re-Certification
The Office of Campus Recreation offers re-certification in lifeguarding for $50 and First Aid, CPR and AED at a cost of $25. Contact Shelley Stout at sstout@utm.edu or call (731) 881-7718 and set up your appointment.
Lifeguard Jobs
The Office of Campus Recreation hires lifeguards year-round. The first step for interested lifeguards is to fill out an employment application form, which can be found at the Office of Campus Recreation (1020 Elam Center). The second step is to contact Shelley Stout (Aquatics Coordinator) at sstout@utm.edu or call (731) 881-7718 and set up a skills test/interview for the position. During the skills test you are asked to swim 300-yards and perform a few basic rescues such as active and passive victim rescue, removal from water, and back board skills.
