Lifeguard Jobs, Training, and Re-Certification

Lifeguard Training Class
Become a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard and be trained in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED. All participants must be 15 years of age or older and must pass a pretest, which includes a 300-yard swim, a timed 10 lb. weight test and 2 minute tread using only your legs. The cost of this class is $200 and the certification is valid for 2 years. Space is limited to 10 individuals per class. All registration must be done by contacting Shelley Stout at (731) 881-7718.


Spring 2015 Dates and Times:


April 22-25, 2015

  • Wednesday, April 22, 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm (Prerequisite Skills Test)
  • Thursday, April 23, 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm
  • Friday, April 24, 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm
  • Saturday, April 25, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Cost: $200 total

  • $25 nonrefundable deposit to secure space
  • $175 to be paid after passing prerequisite skills test

Certification: Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED – valid for 2 years



  • Must be at least 15 years old
  • Swim 300 yards (freestyle and/or breaststroke) continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs (hands will be placed under arm pits)
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds
    • Starting in the water, swim 25 yards
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
    • Surface and swim 25 yards on back with both hands holding object
    • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

Class Size:

Maximum of 10 participants, minimum of 4 participants

Lifeguard Re-Certification

Lifeguard Jobs
The Office of Campus Recreation hires lifeguards year-round. The application process requires two steps. The first step for interested lifeguards is to go online at and fill out a job application. The second step is to contact Shelley Stout (Aquatics Coordinator) at or call (731) 881-7718 and set up a skills test/interview for the position. During the skills test you are asked to swim 300-yards and perform a few basic rescues such as active and passive victim rescue, removal from water, and back board skills.
