Intramural Basketball Rules - Spring 2008

All games will be played in the Field House and Elam Center courts 3, 5, & 6.

Intramural sports are offered to UT Martin students on a voluntary basis and each student participates at his/her own risk. Participants are responsible for ensuring that they are physically fit to participate in the selected sport(s), and are encouraged to check with their family physician or Student Health prior to participation.

Officials who are in absolute control of the game will do the officiating. The official shall have the power to make decisions on any matters or questions not specifically covered in the rules.

Game time is forfeit time!
Current TSSAA Rules with the following modifications will govern play:
Below are summaries and explanations of selected rules.

Captains Responsibilities
1.1       Inform team of game time and court location; remind all players to bring their UTM Skyhawk ID. They will not be allowed to play without it.
1.2       Record starting lineup (player's first and last name) prior to game time. If additional players are requested during the first half of the game, but are not on the score-sheet, approval from the opposing captain is required to be added at half time. No other additions will be allowed.
1.3       Represent team at all discussions with game officials
1.4       Keep control of team in all situations.
1.5       Keep control of spectators/fans in all situations
1.6       If desired, designate up to (2) Coaches on roster. Coaches will be the only non-player(s) allowed on the sideline. Coaches must be assigned and on roster by the 1st regular season game.

 

Fouls and Penalties
Personal Fouls
A.        Any player charged with a fifth (5) personal foul shall be disqualified from the game.
B.         Bonus Situations - Upon being charged with a seventh (7) team foul, the opposing team will shoot one plus one free throws.
C.        Bonus Situations –- Upon being charged with a tenth (10) team foul, the opposing team will shoot two free throws the remainder of the game.
D.        Technical fouls do count towards the personal foul count as well as the team foul count.

Technical Fouls
A.        All technical fouls count toward a player's personal total as well as the team total.
B.         Excessive rim hanging and unnecessarily slapping the backboard are automatic technical fouls.
C.        Profanity, foul or abusive language will not be tolerated and is considered a technical foul, whether it is directed toward an official, player, spectator or oneself.
D.        Kicking, spiking or throwing the ball in an unsportsmanlike manner will result in an automatic technical foul.
E.         Players who receive a technical foul will be disqualified from the rest of that half. If disqualified from the second half that player cannot play in an overtime period(s). If a player receives a second technical he/she will not be allowed to play the rest of the game and must contact the Intramural Coordinator or Director to see if and when he/she will be able to play again.

Intentional Fouls
A.        Any foul deemed intentional by the Official will result in immediate ejection from the game.
B.         An intentional foul is defined as any act to hurt the opponent or put the safety of the opponent in jeopardy.
C.        Fouls that are committed in an attempt to conserve the clock must not be excessive in force and must be playing the ball or the resulting foul will be labeled an intentional foul.

Physical Abuse and Disorderly Conduct
All cases of physical abuse and disorderly conduct will be forwarded to the Office of Student Affairs for review. Participants whose cases are under review will be suspended from further play until the situation is resolved.

Jack and Jill Rules
A.        Two (2) teams of five players shall play the game; each team must have two (2) males and three (3) females. No game may start with fewer than these numbers.
B.         Male players are not allowed in the free throw lane, nor may they break the plane of this area at any time (this includes the baseline area out of bounds) at any time on either end of the court. This applies to offensive driving, guarding, and rebounding on both goals and free throws.
C.        If the encroachment is in the violator's offensive court, the ball shall be awarded out-of-bounds to the opposing team.
D.        If the encroachment is in the violator's defensive court, it shall be treated as basket interference (regardless of whether a shot has been attempted), and three points shall be awarded to the other team.
E.         Substitution must be made woman for woman and man for man.

Mercy Rule
If a team is 30 or more points ahead any time after the ten-minute mark in the second half the game shall be declared complete, if before the ten-minute mark a team begins to make a mockery of the game, the officials, sport supervisor, Coordinator or Director may declare the game complete.

Periods and Time Factors
A.        A game consists of two halves. Each lasting twenty (20) minutes with a four (4) minute half time.
B.         At the end of the first half teams change ends of the court.
C.        In the last minute of both halves the clock will stop when an official;

a. Signals:
1. Fouls
2. Jump Ball
3. Violation
4. Ball out of play
b. Stops Play:
1. Because of an injury
2. To confer with table
3. Because of an unusual delay in getting a dead ball live
4. For an emergency
c. Grants a player’s oral request for a time-out, such a request can only be granted when:
1. The ball is in control or at disposal of a player of his/her team.
2. The ball is dead.

Player's Equipment
A.        Players must wear court shoes. Cleats, street shoes, boots, sandals, or bare feet are prohibited.
B.         Headwear: Players may not wear headwear, unless it is no wider than 2 inches and made of nonabrasive unadorned single-colored cloth, elastic, fiber, soft leather or rubber. Rubber or cloth elastic bands may be used to control hair.
C.        Pads, braces, or casts must be pre-approved by the Coordinator of Intramurals or the Director of Campus Recreation.
D.        Any type of jewelry (rings, necklaces, or earrings) is prohibited.
E.         Leg and knee braces made of hard, unyielding material, unless covered on both sides and all edges overlapped, and any other hard substance covered with at least ½ inch of closed cell slow recovery rubber or other material of similar thickness and physical properties, is not allowed and must be pre-approved by the Coordinator of Intramurals or Director of Campus Recreation.
F.         Players of opposing teams must wear shirts of contrasting color. The Office of Campus Recreation will supply scrimmage vests. If both teams are have jerseys of the same color a coin flip between the 2 captains will decide who has to change jerseys.
G.        Each player must wear a T-shirt with sleeves underneath the scrimmage vests.
H.        Individual team jerseys are permissible with the following requirements: 
1.         Every player must wear the same color jersey.
2.         Must be of contrasting color to the opposing team.
3.         Must be single or double numbered jersey.
4.         Cannot have any obscene designs or words on the jersey.

Protest
Detailed protest procedures are outlined in the Program Handbook. These must be followed to the letter for the protest to be accepted.

Scoring
A.        Forfeited/defaulted game = 1 point
B.         Field Goal = 2 or 3 points
C.        Free Throw = 1 point

Substitutions
A.        Substitutions may occur only during a dead ball, must be immediate, and must be announced to the official scorekeeper.
B.         The player entering the game must obtain permission from a court official to enter the court.

Tie Game
A.        If the score is tied when the time has expired the teams will play a two (2) minute overtime period. The length of the extra period shall be two (2) minutes with the clock stopping during the last minute of play as described in Rule 2.
B.         If a second overtime is necessary, each time will designate one player to shoot a foul shot. Opposing players will alternate the shot until a winner is determined when a player misses a shot out of sequence. Players participating in the foul shots must be on the floor at the end of regulation. Teams cannot substitute in this situation. This overtime procedure will be followed in the regular season only. During the playoffs, two (2) minute overtime periods will continue until a winner is decided.

Time Out
A.        Each team is allowed one (1) one (1)-minute time-out during each half and during the overtime period.
B.         A time-out may be called when: 
a. The ball is in control or at disposal of a player of his/her team
b. The ball is dead.
