Intramural Volleyball Rules
Fall 2010
All games will be played in the Student Recreation Center gym.
Intramural sports are offered to UT Martin students on a
voluntary basis and each student participates at his/her own risk. Participants
are responsible for ensuring that they are physically fit to participate in the
selected sport(s), and are encouraged to check with their family physician or
Student Health prior to participation.
The officiating will be done by officials who are in
absolute control of the game. The official shall have the power to make
decisions on any matters or questions not specifically covered in the rules.
Game time is forfeit time!
National Federation Volleyball Rules will govern play with
the following modifications:
Captains Responsibilities
1. Captains’ Responsibility
1.1
Inform team of game time and playing
court; remind all players to bring their UTM ID card.
1.2 Record starting lineup (player’s first and last name)
prior to game time.
1.3 Represent team at all discussions with game officials.
1.4 Keep control of team in high stress situations.
Keep their spectators under control.
2. Game
2.1 Matches will consist of the best of 3 games. The first
team to win 2 games, wins the match.
2.2 The first two games will be played to 25 points
rally
scoring. A 3rd game if necessary, will be
played to 15 points tally scoring. Games
must be won by 2 points.
2.3 Teams must have five players before a match can be
started.
2.4 Each team is allowed two 30 second time outs per game.
2.5 Substitutions will be allowed only when the ball is
dead and only following the officials
approval. Once
a player has substituted for another
player they can
only switch with each other until the
following game.
If an injury occurs, and there is only
one extra
player they can come in for the injured
individual.
If all players have already subbed in
then any of them
can come in for the injured player.
2.6 Unlimited
substitutions will be allowed.
Game time is forfeit
time.
3. Playing the Game
3.1 The server is to wait for the referee to sound his/her
whistle before serving the ball.
3.2 A player continues to serve until a fault occurs by the
serving team.
3.3 If a team serves out of order, the team loses the
service and any points gained during
that service. The players of the team at fault must immediately resume their
correct position on the court.
3.4 The server has 5 seconds to serve the ball
3.5 Each team will change sides after each game.
3.6 The ball must be rolled under the net in between
serves.
3.8 A player who contacts the ball or is contacted by the
ball is considered to have played the
ball.
3.9 The ball may be hit by any part of the body
(unintentional or intentional), and is
considered one
of your 3 hits..
3.10 The ball may not be held, thrown or pushed.
3.11 A player may not touch the net with any part of the
body while the ball is in play.
A player may not reach over the net.
However, if the follow-thru causes the players hand/arm to cross the net
without interfering with an opponents attempt to play, the action is legal.
A ball touching any part of the
boundary line is
considered INBOUND.
A block is not considered a hit. The
blockers may
participate in the next contact.
A serve may not be blocked or attacked at
the net.
However, you may set a serve. Also, double hits are
legal on serves. Serves that hit the net are
considered in play.
3.14 Players may play balls out of the net.
3.15 If two or more players of the same team simultaneously
contact the ball, it is considered on
hit, and either player may participate in the next play.
4. Point
4.1 When a fault is committed by the receiving team a point
is awarded to the serving team.
4.2 When a fault is committed by the serving team a sideout
and point is declared.
4.3 A point is awarded when:
a. The ball touches the floor
b. The ball is held, thrown, or pushed
c. A team plays the ball more that 3
times
successively
d. A player touches the ball twice
consecutively
e. A team is out of position at service
f. A player touches the net
g. A
player completely crosses the midline
h. backline player while in the attack
area, hits a
ball which is
above the height of the net, into the
opponents
playing area.
i. A ball lands outside the court or
touches an object
outside
the court
j. A player receives a personal penalty
k. A player reaches under the net and
touches or
interferes
with an opponent
l. A team intentionally delays the
progress of the
game.
m. Illegal blocking
5. Co-Rec Rules
5.1 Three men and three women constitute a team. A game
cannot start or continue with fewer
than these numbers.
5.2 Player positions must alternate by gender.
5.3 During play, if the ball is contacted more than once on
a side of the net, one of the contacts
must be made by a female.
5.4 Substitute players must enter or re-enter for a player
of the same gender.
