Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am interested in pursuing a graduate education degree but I only have a limited time to finish the degree.  How long will it take to finish each of the offered education graduate degrees?

 

A: In general the MSIL and Counseling programs require 2-2.5 years.  Other programs can be completed in 1.5-2 years.  However, the lengths of programs vary depending on a student's program choice, educational background, required pre-requisites, and course load.

 

Q: Are all classes offered during each semester, including the summer?

 

A: The course rotations vary but many classes are available each semester and during the summer, this includes some online courses.  The course schedules for the next semester are made available during the middle of the current semester.  The summer semester schedule is made available during the middle of the spring semester.

 

Q: When do these classes meet? During the week, weekend, online, night, day?

 

A: The majority of graduate courses take place on weekday evenings. The times can vary, but they usually begin between 4 pm and 7 pm and last 2.5 hours.  Many of the classes and ALL EDAS classes are available online through Blackboard.  Contact the New College for online courses at 731-881-7589 or 1-800-829-8861 ext. 7589.

 

Q: What are the fees for application and tuition for classes?  Who do I contact for financial aid and scholarship information?

 

A: Applications fees are $30.00.  All information on tuition can be found on the Office of Graduate Studies website or here in pdf.  Please visit the Office of Student Financial Aid for financial aid and scholarship information.  You may also call the Education Graduate Office for information specific education scholarships.

 

Q: Where do I find important dates about registration, drop/add deadlines, final exam schedules, and others?

 

A: This information is available on the Office of Academic Records - Academic Calendar website  -  http://www.utm.edu/departments/registrar/dates.php

 

Q: I am on an Alternative E Licensure.  Does the UTM Education Graduate Program have a specific program for this licensure?

 

A: Yes, contact the Education Graduate Office for further information.

 

Q: I have credit from another graduate program that might transfer to this program or substitute for a required course.  What steps do I need to take to request these transfers or substitutions?

 

A: You will have to come to the Education Graduate Office and fillout a Special Request for substitution or transfer of credit.  This request will then be evaluated and ruled on by the Education Graduate Committee.  Further evaluation and ruling may be made by the UTM Graduate Studies Commitee.

 

Q: Do I have to take a comprehensive examination before I graduate?  When? Who do I contact to register for this exam?

 

A: Yes you will have to take a comprehensive examiniation before you graduate and it is usually taken during the middle of your last semester (also summer). It is for Degree Seeking students only. For registration and examination details you must either contact or visit the Education Graduate Office.
