B.S. IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE CURRICULUM

The student must complete the following minimal requirements and earn a grade of C or better in all major field requirements.  In addition to the criminal justice major field courses, students should select one of the criminal justice concentration areas as outlined below.  The maximum number of hours in criminal justice courses allowed to count toward graduation is fifty(50).  A minor is required.

 

GENERAL EDUCATION (54-58 HOURS)

  • Aesthetics
    (Completion of three hours from approved general education listing, 3 hours)
  • Biology 110-120 (8 hours)
  • Communications 230 (3 hours)
  • Computer Science 201 (3 hours)
  • English 100-110-112 or 111-112 (6 - 11 hours)
  • Any English Language Literature
    (choose 3 hours from English 250, 251, 260, 261, 270, or 271)
  • Foreign Language 
    (Completion of 122 or higher in any language, 4-8 hours)
  • History 201-202 (6 hours)
  • Mathematics 140 and 160 or 210 (6 hours)
  • Social Science.
    (Two of the following social science sequences, 12 hours):
    • Anthropology 101, 300
    • Political Science 210-220
    • Psychology 110-120
    • Sociology 201-202

 

MAJOR FIELD (51 hours)

  • Criminal Justice 200, 220, 300, 315, 320, 364, 400, and 460
  • Criminal Justice Electives: 6 upper division hours
  • Sociology 301, 302, 305 and 413
  • Complete one of the Criminal Justice concentration areas outlined below.

 

                 Law Enforcement Concentration (12 hous)

                    This concentration is designed to prepare students for careers in law enforcement,

                    with a special emphasis on course work that will develop the knowledge and skills

                    necessary for entry level police work.  This course work will also assist those

                    students who wish to pursue educational opportunities at the master's level. 

  •    Concentration requirements:

                     Criminal Justice 310, 340, 420, and 400 or 470

   

                Corrections Concentration (12 hours)

                      This concentration is designed to prepare students for careers in the fields of

                      institutional and community-based corrections, with a special emphasis on

                      developing the knowledge and skills necessary for entry level corrections,

                      probation, or parole officer positions.  This course work will also assist those

                      students who wish to pursue educational opportunities at the master's

                      level.

  •    Concentration Requirements
  •                       Criminal Justice 370, 380, 415, and 470

       

                 Courts and Law Concentration (12 hours)

                          This concentration is designed to prepare students for the

                          development of knowledge and skills to assist with their pursuance of

                          careers in the legal field, as well as provide preparation courses for

                          those students planning to pursue further legal education.

  •    Concentration Requirements

                      Criminal Justice 400, 413, 420, and 470

            

                 Generalist Concentration (12 hours)

                      This concentration is designed to allow students to create their own concentration

                      areas through the development of knowledge and skills needed to address a

                      wide array of employment choices and opportunies.  This course work will also

                      assist those students who wish to pursue educational opportunities at the

                      master's level.

  •    Concentration Requirements

                      Twelve upper-division hours (300-400 level) of criminal justice courses

                      excluding those listed under the major field core courses.

                      

                                       

MINOR FIELD (12 hours minimum)
Completion of course requirements (at least 12 hours) and any prerequisites for a minor in any area approved by the student's advisor.

 

GENERAL ELECTIVES
(choose enough electives to total 120 degree hours)

 

Minimum Hours Required For Graduation: 120

B.A. or B.S. Curriculum: A minor consists of Criminal Justice 200, 220, 300, 315 and 6 additional hours selected from upper division criminal justice courses.
