TN COMPONENT OF SCIENCE: Process of Science

TN GOAL:

    To enable students to demonstrate the processes of science by posing questions and investigating phenomena through langauage, methods and instruments of science.
TN THEME:
    1.3 COLLECTING DATA - The acquiring, recording, arranging and storing of information must be performed in a complete, accurate, concise and user-friendly manner.
TN STANDARD(S): The learner will understand that:

    1.3a Data are collected using the senses, instrumentation, and a variety of other technologies.

    BENCHMARK: Students experience and learn about the world through their senses. Tools. such as thrmometers, magnifiers, rulers, calculators, computers, scales and balances supply additional information for scientific investigation.

    1.3b Data should be appropriate, accurate, and free of bias.

    BENCHMARK: Records of observations and experiments are to be accurate and free of bias to ensure scientific comparison of data.

CLASSROOM CONNECTOR

TIME REQUIRED:

    One-two weeks (one dinosaur per day - 30 minutes per day)
MATERIALS:
    Pictures, ditto information, records, books, filmstrips, clay, pipe cleaners, crayons, tempera, drawing paper
SET:
    The next few days, we are going to discuss one of your favorite topics - dinosaurs. We will learn their names and how they differ. We will be able to name and describe dinosaurs and we will make a dinosaur. Have you ever seen a dinosaur on a television cartoon show? (response) Do you think dinosaurs really talked and lived in houses? (response)
INSTRUCTION:
    (pronounce names, classify; pictures; art supplies) Prehistoric animals differ from animals today. They lived millions of years ago. (Teacher gives characteristics of plant eaters.) Have you seen this on TV? (Brontosaurus on The Flintstones) (Teacher gives characteristics of meat eaters.) What animals of today are like the dinosaurs? (response) The definition of dinosaur is "terrible lizard." (Children, classify from these pictures - as plant or meat eaters.)
ACTIVE PARTICIPATION:
    (Teacher gives information about size, movement, food, teeth and wings. Weekly Reader record about dinosaur names and characteristics is very good.)
SUPERVISED PRACTICE ACTIVITIES:
    (Children draw their own dinosaurs and give them names . Cut and match upper and lower body parts, color, draw pictures from skeletons, match, clay dinosaurs, hand prints, footprints, booklets, walking like dinosaurs, pipe cleaner dinosaur, records, crayon resist dinosaur, books, and filmstrips.)
CLOSURE:
    Think back about our information on dinosaurs and draw (Girls) a meat eater and (Boys) a plant eater.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
    (Pipe cleaner dinosaur, crayon resist dinosaur, match body and leg parts)
