CE/CE Online Mission Statement
|
The CE/CE was founded in 1988 with funding from the Tennessee Valley Authority Environmental/Energy Education Program. In 2001 the CE/CE began the transition to an online curricular resource center which gained fruition in 2003 with the addition of the online resources of the Center of Excellence For Science And Mathematics Education (CESME). CESME closed after a run of 19 years from 1984 until June 30, 2003. In like token the CE/CE closed after a run of 18 years from 1987 until June 30, 2005. The work of the two Centers continues as a virtual presentation on the Internet where in excess of 1.2 million hits are recorded annually.
At this point in the history of what is now the CE/CE Online, the two most significant activities continue to be curricular materials prepared for teachers of science and mathematics by either/both the CE/CE and CESME and virtual field trips for teachers and students featuring waterfowl. Through this change in the delivery system the science and mathematics curricular materials are available at no cost to the user through a materials resource center located on the Internet.
Waterfowl field trips are still conducted with no cost to the school or students at Waterfowl of Chenoa which is located five minutes from the UT Martin campus. However, in keeping with the CE/CE Online theme the featured waterfowl can also be viewed on a virtual field trip by way of the Internet. In addition to photographs there is text related to each of the waterfowl entries as well as reference materials and links to similar Internet sites.

Professional Associations
|
For a long period of time the faculty and staff associated with CESME and the CE/CE carried out integral roles in the life of the science and mathematics related state organizations. These people realized the importance of the organizations in providing stability for the public school curricula they represented. The CE/CE Online continues to support the efforts of these organizations by helping to keep them in public view. If you are not a member of one of the organizations you are encouraged to try one. Science Curricular Efforts For The Elementary School
|
During the months of August through December of 1995, 17 teachers of grades kindergarten through grade 8 worked to prepare the third edition of the Science Activities Manual: K-8. The third edition or World Wide Web Edition (1997) conformed to an innovative Tennessee Science Curriculum Framework: K-8 1997, and is also based on the National Science Education Standards. Grade level specific pages have been constructed based on this most recent effort to improve the quality of life of Tennessee's K-8 students through the study of science. The resulting classroom connectors can be found at Science Activities Manual: K-8.
Since the publication of the Science Activities Manual K - 8, World Wide Web Edition in 1997 teachers from all over the world have expressed an interest in using SAM. Although Tennessee is moving to a new version of the Tennessee Science Curriculum Framework in 2003 many Tennessee teachers still adapt the classroom connectors included in SAM as they construct new and challenging curricular efforts associated with the Tennessee Science Curriculum Framework: K-8 (2003).
Environmental Science Curricular Efforts
For The Elementary School
|
Three online entries are being prepared to aid in meeting the need for environmental science activities in the elementary school. The first of these efforts Environmental Science Activities Manual: K-2 and Environmental Science Activities Manual: 3-5 are now available. The remaining Environmental Science Activities Manual: 6-8 will follow shortly. All three preparations are being assembled from activities included in the very popular Science Activities Manual: K-8.

Physical Science Curricular Efforts
|
During the Summer of 1995 a group of Tennessee teachers participated in an intensive two-week program presented by CESME in which they were trained in the use of the Learning Cycle and the PSAM. The Physical Science Activity Manual contains 34 hands-on activities to bring excitement to the phisical science classroom. The activities can be download for the Macintosh which includes an (MS Word) version of the entire manual or for the PC which includes a Windows (Wordperfect) version of the entire manual. A final option is the downloading of a PDF version. Individual chapters may be downloaded by clicking the appropriate version beside the title.

High School Ecology Curricular Efforts
|
Using Tennessee's Four Components for Science Education originally presented in the Tennessee Science Curriculum Framework: 9-12 (1997) as a foundation, the CE/CE Online offers a detailed presentation for Ecology And The Conservation Of Natural Resources. This curricular effort is intended as a culminating experience whose mission is aided by knowledge of biology, chemistry, and geology. The Ecology And The Conservation of Natural Resources Home Page includes the content topics, corresponding content objectives, and classroom connectors (under construction) in the tradition of the Science Activities Manual: K-8. Correlation with the National Science Education Standards has also been included. CE/CE Online Themes, Standards, and Benchmarks have been incorporated to conform with Tennessee's Four Component's for Science Education first presented in 1997 and continued in 2003.
Also using the Tennessee Science Curriculum Framework: 9-12 (1997) as a foundation, the CE/CE Online has provided suggested content objectives for Environmental Science. This course is better suited for students not planning to attend college. The Environmental Science Home Page includes the CE/CE Online content topics, and corresponding CE/CE Online suggested content objectives. Correlation with the National Science Education Standards has also been included. As suggestions are made by the several groups working on this course, additions will be made to this page. Your suggestions will be most appreciated and can be sent to the email address below.
Special Presentations Of Virtual Associates Program And Other Program Participants
|
The Virtual Associates Program was comprised of a group of mathematics
and science teachers who applied and were accepted by CESME to
develop materials that comply with the Tennessee frameworks and national
standards. The CESME Virtual Associates Project began in the 1996-1997 school
year and the finished products have proven to be an an asset to Tennessee
teachers, as well as those across the nation. In addition to the VAP participants other students and classroom teachers have made significant contributions to CESME or to CE/CE. Some of these activities are detailed in other places on this web site. A Special Presentations page has been established to detail the others.

Waterfowl of Chenoa Field Trips
|
Virtual field trips are possible for Waterfowl of Chenoa by utilizing the materials on this site. Waterfowl of Chenoa is a privately owned collection of wild ducks, shelducks, and geese located approximately four miles from the UT Martin campus. Chenoa, founded in 1980, has as a major goal the collection of at least one pair of each of the sixteen species of true geese and the six species of shelducks. The collection presently includes pairs representing all six species of shelducks and all 16 species of true geese. The 16 species of true geese are represented by pairs from 27 of the 37 sub species.
To find out about the facility you may select Waterfowl of Chenoa. The True Geese: Anser Species, True Geese: Branta Species, and Shelducks serve as the focal points for the CE/CE virtual presentation, although a significant number of Ducks have been added.

Fowl Ideas For The Aviculturist
|
This entry is presented in the tradition of "reaching for your head, rather than your pocketbook" which is one of the content threads associated with field trips at Waterfowl of Chenoa. Efforts are made to show students that although you can buy anything if you have the money, your quality of life can be improved considerably by applying the science learned in school to interests or hobbies. Literally, this section is intended to explore ways in which the individual can employ school science ideas to solve problems and meet needs related to aviculture. This constantly growing section Fowl Ideas For The Aviculturist can assist teachers, science students, 4-H club members, and aviculturalists.

Statistics For Educational Projects
|
As a convenience to classroom teachers, the syllabus for Statistics For Educational Projects can be viewed or downloaded. The supporting materials to the syllabi will soon be inserted on the web for use by teachers or students applying statistics to applicable science projects.
