MATERIALS:
Pictures or examples of simple machines
SET:
What is a simple machine? (response) Please look around the room for a simple machine. (pause) Can you tell me one machine that we use in this room? (response) Today we are going to study simple machines such as the hammer, screwdriver, bottle opener, and scissors.
INSTRUCTION:
(Discuss what machines and work mean.) Work is the movement of an object. Simple machines make work easier. Examples of simple machines in the home are: scissors, hammer, bottle opener, screwdriver, jack, seesaw, crowbar, can opener, garage door opener, and nutcracker. (Have a table set with simple machines. Let each child select one machine. Then have the child describe the machine and the work it does . )
ACTIVE PARTICIPATION:
(Have each child draw a picture of a simple machine that is used in his/her home. Then have a discussion about each picture.)
REINFORCEMENT:
(Give each student a job to do. He/she must then select the tool to do the job.)
CLOSURE:
What have we discussed today? (Simple machines and their work) Name a simple machine. (response) Yes simple machines do make work easier. What is work? (response) Work is the movement of an object.
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
Today we discussed machines and their work. Make a list of simple machines in your home. (Discuss the list of each student o the next day.)
