MATERIALS:
Freezer paper, crayons, picture of eating habits with animals and people, Hap Palmer record (Getting To Know Yourself)
SET:
What do you need to stay health? (response) Today we are going to talk about the needs of our bodies.
INSTRUCTION:
(Make a bulletin board with pictures illustrating the basic need of the body:
1. physical -food, water, air, shelter, rest, exercise;
2. emotional - love;
3. social - companionship.)
Human beings need to take good care of their bodies so that all parts of it will work right. Can you think of some ways you can take care of your body? (response) Draw a picture of some ways you take care of your body. (pause)
ACTIVE PARTICIPATION:
Good food and regular eating habits are very important to the human body. Did you eat some food from each of the four main food groups yesterday (response) Draw a picture that shows a healthy, well-balanced meal. (pause) (Have a class discussion on My Best Friend." Allow each student to describe one good quality of a friend.) Everyone needs a friend. Human beings have a basic need for friendship and companionship.
Friendships are made when we are trustworthy, honest, kind, and use good manners. What are good manners? (response) (Talk about the things that are considered to be good manners. Have each child to select a partner to illustrate good manners. Examples are saying thank-you, taking turns, and helping someone.)
What human needs are the same as animal needs? (Physical needs - food, water, air and shelter) What human needs are different from animal needs? (Love and companionship) Compare the behavior of animals to the behavior of human beings. (response followed by board list) (Teacher - Make a bulletin board to represent the basic needs of man and the other half to represent the basic needs of animals.
CLOSURE:
What have we been studying this week? (The human body and its needs) What kinds of needs? (Social, physical and emotional) Can you list some of these basic needs? (pause) If so, please list one. (Food, water, air and shelter - physical; friendship and companionship - social; love - emotional)
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
Draw a picture of a well-balanced person in a good environment.
