CONTENT OBJECTIVE: 4B5.00 To know and practice safety rules when using electricity
INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: The learner will:
5.01 recall the safety rules for using electricity.
5.02 generalize the rationale for each of the safety rules for using electricity.
OUTLINE OF CONTENT:
I. Safety
II. Safety rules
TN COMPONENT OF SCIENCE: Process of Science
TN GOAL:
To enable students to demonstrate the processes of science by posing questions and investigating phenomena through language, methods and instruments of science.
TN THEME:
1.3 COLLECTING DATA - The acquiring, recording, arranging and storing of information must be performed in a complete, accurate, concise and user-friendly manner.
TN STANDARD(S): The learner will understand that:
1.3c Safety features should be observed in all areas of data collection.
BENCHMARK: Use of proper safety procedures should be followed in the classroom, laboratory, and home environment.
CLASSROOM CONNECTOR
TIME REQUIRED:
One instructional period
MATERIALS:
Filmstrip on safety (See local electric company), screen, projector
SET:
Electricity is a very useful kinds of energy but it can also be very dangerous. Can you think of a time you saw someone using a good electrical safety rule? And abused a safety rule? Today we will learn safety rules for using electricity.
INSTRUCTION:
We are going to watch a film on safety when using electricity. Electricity is very powerful as well as helpful. We must always be very careful when we are around electrical appliances or electrical wires. (Turn off lights and watch film.) Now let's list some safety rules of our own. (List should include: Never touch appliances with wet hands or while in water. Repair frayed and worn cords. Do not overload outlets. Do not stick foreign objects such as pins, nails, etc. in outlets.)
ACTIVE PARTICIPATION:
(Bring in examples of dangerous situations/examples and have students write and act out skits using the safety rules.)
CLOSURE:
Today we have discussed rules related to safety when using electricity. Please write one safety rule and share with your neighbor. (pause) (Call on individuals to share with class, summarize) (Cut apart into puzzles and place in envelope. Have children trade with neighbors, work and discuss.)
RESOURCES:
Local electrical companies have a safety presentation and presenter that could be used in lieu of video or filmstrip. Presenter uses a model.
