CLASSROOM CONNECTORS
TIME REQUIRED:

MATERIALS:
Diagram showing parts of a plant; pictures of fruits, flowers, and seeds
SET:
Today, boys and girls, we are going to learn about the different uses of the parts of a plant. No you all know the parts of the plant. (pause) I want each of you to tell your neighbor the six parts of the plant. (Roots, stems, leaves, Flowers, fruits, seeds) Now, why would you want to know several different uses for these parts? (response)
INSTRUCTION AND SUPERVISED PRACTICE:
On the board I have written the six parts of the plant. Let's name as many uses for each one as we can think of. You name them and I will write them down.
(Examples:
Flowers
1. color for yard
2. food
3. beauty
Fruits
1. food
2. beauty
3. clothing
Seeds
1. food
2. used to make new plants
3. decorations)
Now let's take each part and name some that are foods, since foods fall under each part.
Some roots we eat are: potatoes, onions, turnips, carrots, radishes, beets Some leaves we eat are: lettuce, spinach, cabbage, turnip greens Some stems we eat are: celery, asparagus, broccoli Some flowers we eat are: broccoli, cauliflower Some fruits we eat are: tomatoes, squash, apples, peaches, green beans, bananas
CLOSURE:
Now let's all think together one more time. Tell your neighbor two uses for roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds. You have all done a good job. (pause, then summarize)
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
Now, I have one more thing I want you to do. Look in magazines or newspapers tonight for different foods that come from plants. Be ready to tell the class what part of the plant the food is. (OR, have the children cut out pictures of things that come from plants. Have them fit under these headings: BUILDING, CLOTHING, FOOD, BEAUTY.)
