Joseph E. Johnson Engineering and Physical Sciences Building is hosts three academic departments at UT Martin.  The Department of Engineering and the Department of Chemistry and Physics are based in the facility.  The Geosciences program of the Department of Agriculture, Geosciences, and Natural Resources is also situated in this building.  The main offices of the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences are located on the first floor of Johnson EPS.  Several offices for faculty/staff affiliated with programs based elsewhere on campus are in the building as well.

Although it is essentially one building, Johnson EPS is actually made up of two integrated structures that were constructed at different times.  The east-side (quad-side) of the building was built in the early 1960s; the west side and interconnecting features were added about a decade later.  Unfortunately, little effort was made at the time of the addition to match its exterior design with that of the original structure.  Nevertheless, it has its attractive qualities.  The building was dedicated to former University of Tennessee President Joseph E. Johnson in 1999.
