IN THE SHADOWS OF GAY STREET

<< This photograph was taken just west of Gay Street and Market Square in Knoxville during March 2005.

As can be seen, this was almost a depressing photograph to take after leaving a very pleasant Market Square.  The Fast Cash office can be seen on the right within this aging district of Knoxville.  Major construction was occurring to the left as can be seen with the open space and barricades.

This is another example of the effects of gentrification; instead of having a very nice downtown or a very unpleasant one, cities contain both in coexistence with one another.
