Physics/Astronomy Program: Laboratories and Specialized Equipment
The Physics and Astronomy program utilizes a number of rooms for the laboratory courses:
- the General Physics and Astronomy Laboratory (Room 224 Johnson EPS) has 18 personal computers, some of which have data acquisition interfaces. Internet access will be available on all PCs in the near future. For students taking introductory astronomy, Starry Night planetarium software and CLEA (Computer Laboratory Experience in Astronomy) programs can be used to simulate the night sky and to conduct modern astronomical research projects.
- the Physics 150 and Astronomy Laboratory (Room 226) is used to perform various classroom demonstrations and in-class experiments.
- the " Black Lab" (Room 223) contains 4 cubicles dedicated to physics laboratory experiments; other cubicles in the Black Lab contain electronic and machine shops. A magnetic materials research station will be established soon for faculty and student research.
- a personal computer with a Sun Microsystems' Solaris operating system is connected with the Harvard Center for Astrophysics mainframe computer to perform computational analysis of star formation. This computer is located in Room 222A.
- a Meade ETX-90 90mm automatic telescope and a Meade LX-10 8-inch telescope are available for astronomical observations.
For more information about the Physics & Astronomy laboratories or equipment, please contact the Chair of the department.
