Alumni News Notes :

July 2007

Our students have been doing great things (as expected).  Here are some highlights:

- Whitney D. Durham (UTM Geography 2000) will be defending his doctoral dissertation at Oklahoma State University and has been working in the "Washington DC area" for the federal government this summer.

- Brandon Herrington (UTM Geography 1998) is a GIS Analyst III with GIS Services of the State of Tennessee in Nashville.  Previously, he worked at a GIS specialist for Aiken County, SC.

- Matthew S. Huber (UTM Geology 2007) will be entering the masters program in geology at Louisiana State University in August; this summer, he has been at a summer fieldcamp in the Adirondacks.

- Samuel Eric Hummer (UTM Geography 2005) is joining the US Air Force and will be in an officer and pilot training program; he's scheduled to fly A-10 Warthogs.

- Tomi McCutchen Parrish (UTM Geography 2005) was granted tenure by UT Martin and continues her service as Instructor of Communications.

- Nicholas R. Quinton (UTM Geography 2004) is defending his masters thesis in political geography at the University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa; he now newly-married to Melanie A. Clinton (also at UTM alum)!

- Elizabeth C. Rhenberg (UTM Geology 2005) has been finishing up her masters work in Geology at Kent State University.

- Amelia C. Robinson (UTM Geology 1997) has been finishing up her PhD in Geology at UC-Davis and has accepted a tenure-track faculty position at the Univ. of Arkansas at Little Rock.

- Justin C. Whipple (UTM Geography 2006) is working with the Emergency Communications Center in Nashville doing GIS work for their operations.

Rogers Appointed Department Chair:

December 2006

Jefferson S. Rogers, Associate Professor of Geography, was appointed as the Department's Chair in December 2006.  He had served as the unit's Interim Chair from August 2002 through December 2006.  He has lost even more hair; what's left is going gray.

 

Three New Faculty Members to Join GGP in Fall 2006 :

May 2006

The faculty Department of Geology, Geography, and Physics will be joined by three new faculty members in August 2006.  Dr. Stan Dunagan and Dr. Elizabeth McClellan have been hired to fill tenure-track positions in the Department's geology program; Dr. Linghong Li has been selected to fill a tenure-track position in physics.

 

Bob Self Announces Plans to Retire:

January 2006

Dr. Robert P. Self, Professor of Geology, has announced plans to retire at the end of the 2005-2006 academic year.  Prior to his arrival to UT Martin in 1990, Dr. Self worked in the private sector, served as a consultant with the Louisiana Geological Survey, and was a tenured faculty member at Nicholls State University in Louisiana. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Navy.  During his tenure on our campus, Dr. Self served as the Chair of the Department, continued his geological research on gravels and other related topics, taught numerous geology courses and field studies, and participated in many departmental and campus committees. 

 

Mark Simpson Promoted, Granted Tenure:

July 2005

The Department of Geology, Geography, and Physics congratulates Dr. Robert Mark Simpson for being promoted to Associate Professor of Geography and granted tenure, effective in August 2005.

 

Tahira Arshed Announces Plans to Retire:

July 2005

Dr. Tahira N. Arshed , Professor of Physics, has announced plans to retire at the end of the Fall 2005 semester.  She has been highly active in higher education at universities and other institutions on four continents since the early 1960s.  UT Martin has been very fortunate to have her as a faculty member since 1990.

 

Honors Study Room Dedicated to Dr. Ernie Blythe:

May 2005

The study room at the Holland McCombs Center has been dedicated in honor of the late Dr. Ernest W.  Blythe, Jr. , Professor Emeritus of Geology.  Dr. Blythe arrived to the UT Martin campus in 1969 and was the founding director of the UT Martin Honors Program in 1981. He served as faculty member in the Department until his retirement in 1997.  Dr. Blythe passed away unexpectedly in early 2005.

 

Lionel Crews Hired for Tenure-Track Physics Position:

April 2005

The Department of Geology, Geography, and Physics is pleased to announce that Dr. Lionel J. Crews has been selected to fill the new tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Physics beginning in August 2005.  Dr. Crews has served as an assistant professor in the department since Fall 2000 in a term position.  As an astronomer, he is an active researcher; he co-authored an article in the Astrophysical Journal on the Coalsack molecular cloud and has worked with University Scholar senior Brian Stiles on various collaborative research projects.  Dr. Crews received his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 2000.

 

New Physics Faculty Member: 

August 2004

The Department of Geology, Geography, and Physics is pleased to welcome Dr. Misganaw Getaneh to our campus.  Dr. Getaneh began his service as an Assistant Professor of Physics (tenure-track) in August 2004.  He is an experimental physicist with special interests in the development of particle detectors, low-temperature properties of materials, and nanotechnology.  He is a native of Ethiopia, where he earned his BS in Physics from Addis Ababa University.  His graduate work was completed at Temple University in Philadelphia.
