Pre-Dentistry
They diagnose and treat diseases, injuries, and malformation of teeth and gums and related oral structures. They may treat diseases of nerve, pulp, and other dental tissues affecting the vitality of teeth. They examine teeth, gums, and related tissues, using dental instruments, x-rays, and other diagnostic equipment, to evaluate dental health, diagnose diseases or abnormalities, and plan appropriate treatments. They also perform oral and periodontal surgery on the jaw or mouth.
Pre Dentistry students usually major in Biology or Chemistry then transfer to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis or to other schools. In most cases, a Bachelor's Degree is required, but it is possible to enter UT Memphis with only three (3) years of college. Dentists may also specialize in fields such as orthodontia, prosthodontia and endodontia.
The US Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook projects that: Although employment growth will provide job opportunities, most jobs will be replacing retiring dentists. Demand for dental care will grow substantially through 2012 as baby boomers age and need specialty care.
