Physicians work in many different fields such as Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Coroner, Family & General Practioner, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry. They diagnose and treat thousands of diseases, perform surgery, deliver babies, take care of children & adults and many other duties.
Those students interested in becoming physicians usually major in Biology with a Cell & Molecular concentration or Chemistry, but they are not limited to those majors. Pre-medical courses at UT Martin can transfer to the University of Tennessee at Memphis Health Science Center, East Tennessee State University or other schools, usually after completion of a degree. The process of becoming a doctor usually requires four years of college, four years of medical school, and internship. Specialties require a residency, usually two to six years, depending on the one chosen. It is possible to transfer to a medical school after three years of college, but most applicants who are accepted have completed a degree.
The admissions process for entry into medical school is very competitive. In 2007 in Tennessee, there were thirty applicants for every position available in our medical schools. Students must maintain a competitive GPA (3.2 or higher) and do well on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) - a 28 overall score or higher is recommended. They must have experience in medical settings and do well in both the pre-professional interview and the medical school interview. They must also demonstrate empathy for the needs of others, usually by participating in community service locally or abroad. Additionally, they must demonstrate the ability to relate to others by participation in leadership opportunities and extracurricular activities. Joining the campus Pre-professional student organization Mu Epsilon Delta (www.utm.edu/departments/cens/biology/med.htm) is also highly recommended.
The US Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook projects that: Employment of physicians and surgeons will grow at an average rate for all occupations through 2012. The growing and aging populations will drive overall growth.
