Thomas A. Rakes is the ninth chancellor at The University of Tennessee at Martin. Prior to his appointment as chancellor, Tom served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UT-Martin. He served as interim president at The University of Louisiana at Monroe where he also held positions as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, and Dean of the College of Education and Human Development from 1995 until 2002.
A Virginia native, Dr. Rakes began his career in higher education at The University of Memphis where he spent sixteen years as a faculty member, seven years as a department chair, and where he also served as director of research and development in the College of Education. He holds a B.S. degree in psychology from Milligan College, a M.A. from East Tennessee State University, and a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
During his career Dr. Rakes has authored 24 books and monographs and more than 80 national and international-level publications. He has served as principal investigator or administrator for over $7.5 million in external grants. Tom has been involved on numerous community boards including the Boy Scouts of America, the United Way, the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, Blue Ribbon Commission on Excellence in Education, and the Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Rakes has served as a consultant to more than 40 different colleges and universities in 21 states as well as corporate groups such as Belz Enterprises, Harcourt Brace, several insurance companies, and financial institutions.
His wife, Dr. Glenda Rakes, is a professor of education at UT-Martin who specializes in instructional design and technology.
