Chancellor's Corner

Administration

Hello, and welcome to the University of Tennessee at Martin's Web site and Chancellor's Corner. Please spend some time with us visiting the other links and features of the site. Get acquainted with the university, and see what we have to offer through excellent academic programs and opportunities for personal and social growth.

Chancellor Rakes

UT Martin is "home" to almost 8,000 students who have the choice of more than 100 different specialties in undergraduate and graduate programs. There are majors in the natural and social sciences, humanities, fine and performing arts, computer science, nursing, agriculture, teacher education, business administration and engineering. Master's degrees are offered in accounting and business administration, counseling and teacher education, family and consumer sciences and agriculture and natural resources systems management.

UTOnline makes earning a degree more convenient, especially for our non-traditional students. The Online Bachelor of University Studies (B.U.S.) degree, as well as online master's degrees in education (with a major in educational administration and supervision), agriculture and natural resources systems management, community and school counseling, family and consumer sciences and an MBA program are perfect for students balancing job, family and other responsibilities.

Also extending UT Martin's reach, is the Office of Extended Campus and Online Studies with centers located in Jackson, Parsons, Ripley and Selmer. These teaching centers offer traditional-age and adult students college credit near home and a seamless transition to UT Martin, if they choose later to attend classes on the main campus.

The university has gained national recognition involving initiatives related to community and civic engagement as well as sustainability. These include being named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll and "The Princeton Review's Guide to 311 Green Colleges: 2011 Edition." Many students are involved in experiences in one of our travel-study programs. Offered in partnerships with a number of universities around the world, these special programs help prepare our students to move easily throughout a global environment. A host of intramural, academic, service and social clubs and organizations offer students opportunities to pursue special interests and talents.

Enhancing our academic programs are faculty members, who engage students in rigorous studies while reflecting a sincere concern for students in their classes. The campus also provides targeted assistance for students by providing tutorial, advising and study assistance through the Student Success Center.

The Martin campus offers a technology-enhanced learning environment that includes wireless access to the Internet and a Computer Store located in Boling University Center. More than 90 percent of the entering first-year students arrive with a computer and are ready to learn in a digitally connected environment.

UT Martin is among the most beautiful campuses in the South After recent completion of more than $20 million in capital and maintenance projects, almost $24 million in additional capital improvement projects are under way or set to begin at UT Martin, including projects through 2012. Among new projects, the Fine Arts Building is being renovated and more than 52,000 square feet of new construction added to the facility at a cost of $14 million.

UT Martin competes in NCAA Division I in both men's and women's athletics and is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. The university's rodeo team is the only collegiate rodeo team in Tennessee and is a member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

Our vision reflects UT Martin's major interest in enhancing the learning, discovery and connectivity of our students, employees and alumni. We have a passion for teaching. As a primarily undergraduate institution, we focus much of our attention and resources toward this important endeavor. Historically, our faculty and students have demonstrated connectivity to our community, the region and the state. Faculty and student involvement in applied research has steadily increased during the most recent decade. Since 2007, I have touted the concept of "capacity building" as a cornerstone through which we enable our students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to enhance student decision making as well as academic, social and personal growth. Within a framework of university values, we view our role as one of ensuring respect for others in a diverse, global community of learners.

Call our office of admissions at 1-800-829-UTM1, 731-881-7020, or e-mail us at admitme@utm.edu to schedule a campus tour and find out more about UT Martin. If you can't visit in person, take our Campus Virtual Tour.

As chancellor, I welcome your comments and observations as we move toward a greater future.
