Philosophy of Teaching

I believe in education’s power to break down socio-economic, gender, racial, and ethnic barriers; to protect democracy by shaping students into citizens; and to teach ethics. At the beginning of each semester I tell my students my desired outcomes for the course: at the ethical level, tolerance, respect, and work ethics; at the intellectual level, critical thinking, clarity of thought and expression, and a sense of detail; at the human level, an appreciation of cultural diversity, and a sense of global societies past and present. Last but not least, let’s remember the age-old adage according to which, in order to know, understand and accept others, we must first learn to know, understand, and accept ourselves.
