Voice Lessons: The UTM Faculty Writing Project is a four-day seminar held on the campus of UT Martin in August. Modeled after the West Tennessee Writing Project summer institute for teachers, Voice Lessons brings together faculty interested in learning ways to include more writing in their curriculum and in their professional and personal lives.

What do seminar participants do?
We read, write, think, write some more, teach each other ways to incorporate more writing into our courses, find approaches to dealing with "the paper load," and explore how making writing central in pedagogy leads to learning course content and to discovering about the learning process itself.

During the mornings of the seminar, we discuss and teach each other approaches to incorporating writing in curriculum, discuss professional writing, and discuss theory and practice. In the afternoons we bring draft writing to writing-response groups, read aloud, and invite responses to our work.

The seminar presents an opportunity for faculty to work together in a collegial setting where all are teachers and all are learners. It presents an opportunity for faculty to learn more about writing and about teaching and, through fall follow-up, to implement summer learning and discuss with colleagues of similar mind the opportunities and frustrations presented when teachers and students are writers.
