Agriculture and Natural Resources
The Voice Lessons Faculty Writing project has the greatest potential to enhance the educational experience at UT Martin of anything that I have experienced. I have struggled to find ways to encourage my students to search for materials pertinent to agriculture outside their normal sphere. My goal is to make the students think and apply what they find to problems they are likely to encounter once they embark on a career. I am particularly interested in helping them develop critical thinking skills.
I have been encouraged by the opportunity Voice Lessons has afforded me to interact with colleagues from across campus and explore with them ideas for challenging students to learn in new ways. Both ideas that these colleagues have tried in the classroom and suggestions of ways they are considering implementing new approaches in their classes to challenge students to take a new view of course material have been presented and discussed. Many of these ideas offer great opportunity for improving my classes in agriculture.
This experience has given me the courage to implement some changes in my syllabi that will incorporate more outside reading coupled with interpretive writing assignments to encourage students to read critically. The greatest benefit I have gained through this experience is the free exchange of ideas with a diverse collection of colleagues. In addition to the ideas I have gleaned from this workshop that I plan to implement in some way, the knowledge that I can depend on the future support of this diverse group of professionals serves as a source of inspiration for my growth as an educator.
Please continue to support Voice Lessons so our campus can continue to grow in its commitment to providing students with the best educational experience possible. Stimulating students to learn broadly and in a variety of ways is what makes us great and, more importantly, will be the reason that new alumni promote their alma mater.
